ENTERAL NUTRITION SUPPORT TO TREAT MALNUTRITION IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE

2015

Malnutrition is a common consequence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Diet has an important role in the management of IBD, as it prevents and corrects malnutrition. It is well known that diet may be implicated in the aethiology of IBD and that it plays a central role in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tract disease. Often oral nutrition alone is not sufficient in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tract disease. Often oral nutrition alone is not sufficient in the management of IBD patients, especially in children or elederly, and must be combined with oral supplementation or replaced with tube enteral nutrition. In this review, we describe several different approaches to enteral …

BENEFICIAL EFFECT OF PROBIOTICS ADMINISTRATION IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE AND RELATED SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

2015

Background: Therapeutic treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may follow different approaches, systemic as well as local, especially when the target is the osteoarticular apparatus. Although some clinical trials have suggested benefits from probiotics administration in IBD, there is still a great deal of controversy on their use. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of probiotics in patients with IBD and related spondyloarthropathy. Material/Methods: Fifty-nine patients affected by IBD with extra-intestinal involvement where evaluated from 2006 to 2010. Twenty-eight patients received administration of a standard therapy with mesalazine and 31 where treated w…

Management of Intra-abdominal Infections due to Carbapenemase-Producing Organisms.

2014

The prevalence of bacterial resistance to carbapenem antibiotics continues to increase because of bacteria producing metallo-β-lactamases (MBL), called carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO). Enterobacteriaceae, which can be a common cause of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs), have become carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Updated international guidelines for the treatment of both IAIs and IAIs due to CRE have been published. Given the multifaceted nature of these infections, these recommendations have been jointly reviewed and endorsed by the Surgical Society and the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease. The aims of this review are to summarize the genera…

Left Spigelian Hernia in Super-Obese Patient: A Case-Report.

2011

Abstract: We report a case in which a giant Spigelian hernia presented with severe, persistent abdominal pain in a 62- year-old super-obese woman with a history of total abdominal hysterectomy-bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy at the age of 40 years for benign neoplasia, who later underwent open hernia repair (maximal diameter of the hernia sac: 21 cm) because of the development of compartment syndrome. Afterward, although a large incarcerated hernia disease was found, the sac removal was technically difficult and an open procedure was carried out, with double-mesh placement. No complications were recorded during the post-operative course. We report a difficult issue related to the diagnosis …

Milestones in robotic colorectal surgery development: an historical overview

2020

The present article is a historical review intended to trace the most important phases in the development of robotic surgical technology, with a special focus on colorectal surgery. The initial section considers the origin and some etymological aspects of the word “robot”. Then, a historical overview traces the development of robotic technology in industry and its implementation within the operating theatres. Finally, the first publications concerning robot-assisted colon and rectal surgery are reported together with a brief state of the art about this issue.

Microsurgical Scalp Reconstruction in the Elderly

2015

BACKGROUND Microvascular reconstruction is the mainstay of treatment in complex scalp defects. The rate of elderly patients requiring scalp reconstruction is increasing, but outcomes in elderly patients are unclear. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature pertaining to free tissue transfer for scalp reconstruction in patients older than 65 years to compare outcomes among different free flaps and determine the safety profile of treatment. METHODS A systematic review of the available literature of patients undergoing microvascular scalp reconstruction was completed. Details for patients 65 years and older were extracted and reviewed for data analysis. RESULTS A t…

Simultaneous endovascular treatment of synchronous symptomatic acute type B aortic dissection and large infrarenal aortic aneurysm. Technical tips an…

2020

Highlights • Acute type B aortic dissection associated with AAA, has a high rupture risk. • This complicated dissection must be considered for treatment as quickly. • This approach can be performed endovascularly when supraaortic trunks are involved. • Totally endovascular solution to address both disease is feasible.
