Persistent and Emerging Organic Pollutants in the Marine Coastal Environment of the Gulf of Milazzo (Southern Italy): Human Health Risk Assessment

The Gulf of Milazzo (north-eastern Sicily) has been recognized as Italian Site of National Interest (SNI; areas characterized by high level of contamination with potential effects on human health) in 2005 because of its high level of pollution. In this study we measured the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polyBrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in seawater and sediments sampled from the Gulf of Milazzo in order to assess (i) the environmental status of contamination, and (ii) cancer and non-cancer human health risk potentially due to dermal absorption from contaminated seawater and/or ingestion of contaminated fish. A series of α,α′-bis(arylimino)-2,3:5,6-bis(pentamethylene)pyridyliron chlorides was synthesized in a one-pot reaction and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis as well as X-ray crystallography for one representative iron complex, where the Fe center adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry with three coordinating nitrogen and two chlorine atoms. Estimation of the environmental hazard of organochlorines in pulp mill biosludge used as soil fertilizer

Abstract Contents of total organic chlorine and polychlorinated phenols, guaiacols, catechols, benzenes, cymenes, cymenenes, naphthalenes, toxic dibenzodioxins, toxic dibenzofurans, toxic PCB congener 77, alkylated dibenzofurans, alkylated bibenzyls and alkylated phenanthrenes in spent biosludges from activated sludge treatment plants of chlorobleaching kraft pulp mills are reported. Some estimations of hazard caused by these organochlorines to humans and wildlife from the use of biosludge as soil fertilizer are constructed and discussed.

Organic chlorine compounds in lake sediments. III. Chlorohydrocarbons, free and chemically bound chlorophenols

Abstract Chlorohydrocarbons and free and chemically bound chlorophenols, catechols and guaiacols were measured from lake sediments in Central Finland. Chlorohydrocarbons occurred at low backround levels except chlorocymenes from pulp mills and PCBs near the city of Aanekoski, where a local leakage occurrs. Free chlorophenols (hexane extractables) were found in all 18 areas studied, but the bound ones (extracted with strong alkali) only in the pulp mill reciepient lakes where they dominated. Pd-catalyzed hydrodehalogenation of chlorinated olefins: Theoretical insights to the reaction mechanism

Abstract Density functional theory calculations are applied to study energetics of trichloroethene (TCE) hydrodechlorination over pure Pd(1 1 1), chlorine-covered Pd(1 1 1), and Pd island supported by Au(1 1 1). Our results show that in all cases C Cl bond breakings take place more readily than C H bond formations and that TCE dechlorinates fully producing CCH precursors for the hydrogenations. The reaction pathway through radical-like species provides a possible explanation to the experimental product distributions that show a nominal amount of lesser chlorinated species in the presence of excess hydrogen. Chronic exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) affect the immune system of fish and could lead to a decreased disease resistance. The effects of Aroclor 1254, PCB mixtures, on the Diplodus puntazzo innate immunity were examined by assaying the zymosan stimulated chemiluminescence response (CL) of peritoneal cavity cells (PCCs) at various times (1, 24, 48 h and 1-4 weeks) from intraperitoneal injection of the xenobiotic (1 mg kg(-1) body weight). Concentration of retene and resin acids in sedimenting particles collected from a bleached kraft mill effluent receiving lake

Abstract The concentration of retene, a di-alkyl substituted PAH derived microbially and thermally from dehydroabietic acid, eight resin acids and their derivatives were analysed from sedimenting particles collected from five lake sites receiving pulp and paper mill effluents and from two reference sites. At five of the sites, samples were collected prior and after a conventional aerated lagoon wastewater treatment system of the mill was modernized with an activated sludge plant, and elemental chlorine free bleaching (ECF) had replaced chlorine bleaching.
