Background and objectives Choir singing has been associated with better mood and quality of life (QOL) in healthy older adults, but little is known about its potential cognitive benefits in aging. In this study, our aim was to compare the subjective (self-reported) and objective (test-based) cognitive functioning of senior choir singers and matched control subjects, coupled with assessment of mood, QOL, and social functioning. Research design and methods We performed a cross-sectional questionnaire study in 162 healthy older (age ≥ 60 years) adults (106 choir singers, 56 controls), including measures of cognition, mood, social engagement, QOL, and role of music in daily life. The choir sin…

Z dziejów muzyki w kościele pw. św. Mikołaja w Nowym Waliszowie na Ziemi Kłodzkiej

2019

W 1930 r. liczył 31 chórzystów i 16 instrumentalistów. Zespół prowadzili miejscowi nauczyciele, którzy byli jednocześnie organistami. Cennych informacji o repertuarze chóru dostarcza inwentarz muzykaliów z 1939 r. obejmujący…

Z dziejów muzyki w kościele pielgrzymkowym pw. św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej w Starym Wielisławiu

2018

The biginnings of musical culture in Stary Wielisław are connected to the parish church of St. Catherine of Alexandria. For centures pilgrims made their wayto the place singing German language hymns. Liturgical customs in Stary Wielisław had a specific character (sung rosary) and certain patterns that had evolved over time (processions). A brass band that accompanied the pilgrims played an important role in them. The traditions of church music were cultivated thanks to the efforts of the local organists as wel as the vocal and instrumental group that was under their direction and whose beginnings reach back to the 17th century. It was one of greatest and best ensembles in the Kłodzko region…

Settore ICAR/18 - Storia Dell'ArchitetturaThe paper aims to study some cases of reconstruction of the apse in some churches of Palermo in the second half of the 16th century. These are the churches of St. Sebastiano St. Francesco d’Assisi and St. Martino delle Scale (in the homonymous monastery) in wichfor liturgical reasons the original apse was "transformed" in a "flat" apse to insert in it the wooden choir. The new positioning of the choir after the Tridentine Reform was a central issue in the Europe of the modern age so even in Palermo there were some debates and controversies about this problem. The change of the shape of the apse determined in fact some considerable constructive problems related to its coverage.

Choral conducting education: The lifelong entanglement of competence, identity and meaning

2020

Choral singing is one of the most widespread musical activities, and choral conductors work in a variety of social settings that involve every imaginable type of choir and musical genre. The conductor role draws on a number of skills and competencies that are partly acquired through education but, equally importantly, through experience. Choral conductors shape their practice in highly individual fashions as amalgamations of background, formal education, career development and working situation. The present qualitative study seeks to uncover how choral conductor practices arise and unfold, by using Etienne Wenger’s theory of communities of practice and situated learning as the key analytic…

Signals of intensification and attenuation in orchestra and choir conduction

2017

Based on a model of communication according to which not only words but also body signals constitute lexicons (Poggi, 2007), the study presented aimes at building a lexicon of conductors’ multimodal behaviours requesting intensification and attenuation of sound intensity. In a corpus of concerts and rehearsals, the conductors’ body signals requesting to play or sing forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo were analysed through an annotation scheme describing the body signals, their meanings, and their semiotic devices: generic codified (the same as in everyday language); specific codified (shared with laypeople but with specific meanings in conduction); direct iconic, (resemblance between visua…

Learning and Synchronising Dance Movements in South African Songs – Cross-cultural Motion-capture Study

2011

Music and dance are human universals. Understanding the communicative nature and the interpersonal dynamics of making music and dancing has a wide area of applications from academic to artistic, educational and therapeutic uses. Cross-cultural and embodied cognitive approaches are important, as they ensure a view across a spectrum of cultural practices and allow us to explore which aspects of cognitive performance are learned and how. In this study, our aims were to use a case study to investigate possible cross-cultural differences in movement, especially corporeal representation of beat and metre; to study group entrainment and factors contributing to synchronisation accuracy. From earli…

The triumphal cross of the cathedral of Nevers: painting technique and examination

2019

The large polychrome wooden cross preserved in the Saint-Cyr et Sainte-Julitte cathedral in Nevers was badly damaged during the bombing in July 1944. Restored and put on display on a modern cross in front of the choir, the sculpture suffered a new fall in 2015. The conservation of the work, directed by DRAC-CRMH of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was preceded by a phase of technical study. Micro-stratigraphic, taxonomic and radiometric analyses and the dendrochronology of the cross were carried out. The dendrochronology of the cross of Nevers and the comparison with radiocarbon dating place the elaboration of the work in the last quarter of the 12th century while confirming the contemporaneousness …
