Children's implicit knowledge of harmony in Western music.

Three experiments examined children's knowledge of harmony in Western music. The children heard a series of chords followed by a final, target chord. In Experiment 1, French 6- and 11-year-olds judged whether the target was sung with the vowel /i/ or /u/. In Experiment 2, Australian 8- and 11-year-olds judged whether the target was played on a piano or a trumpet. In Experiment 3, Canadian 8- and 11-year-olds judged whether the target sounded good (i.e. consonant) or bad (dissonant). Further Investigation of Harmonic Priming in Long Contexts Using Musical Timbre as Surface Marker to Control for Temporal Effects

Harmonic priming studies have reported facilitated processing for chords that are harmonically related to the prime context. Responses to the target (the last chord of an 8-chord sequence) were faster and more accurate when the target was strongly related, i.e., a tonic chord, to the preceding prime context than when it was less related, i.e., a subdominant chord. Newborn infants' auditory system is sensitive to Western music chord categories

Neural encoding of abstract rules in the audition of newborn infants has been recently demonstrated in several studies using event-related potentials (ERPs). In the present study the neural encoding of Western music chords was investigated in newborn infants. Using ERPs, we examined whether the categorizations of major vs. minor and consonance vs. dissonance are present at the level of the change-related mismatch response (MMR). A novel tunicate (Botryllus schlosseri) putative C-type lectin features an immunoglobulin domain.

We have cloned a putative C-type lectin of Botryllus schlosseri [Ascidiacea], whose deduced protein of 333 amino acids features three building blocks: (i) a Greek-key motif signature at the amino-terminus, (ii) a C-type lectin domain signature, and (iii) an immunoglobulin (Ig) domain at the carboxyl terminus. This C-type lectin was termed BSCLT. Similarity searches revealed that the Ig domain in BSCLT, which is evidently not polymorphic, is best classified as an Intermediate-type Ig domain. Rabbit antibodies, raised against recombinant BSCLT, cross-reacted in a Western blot with a 38-kD polypeptide in tunicate crude extract. Shaping ability of nickel-titanium rotary instruments in simulated S-shaped root canals.

Objective The aim of this study was to compare the shaping ability of 4 nickel-titanium rotary techniques and 1 hand technique in simulated S-shaped curved root canals. Study design Seventy-five simulated double-curved resin root canals were divided into 5 groups (n = 15). The canals were compared at 12 different levels and at 3 different times: before preparation and after preparation to master apical 25 and 35. Imaging of nitric oxide in a living vertebrate using a diaminofluorescein probe

Abstract Numerous approaches have been described to identify nitric oxide (NO), a free radical involved in various physiological and pathophysiological processes. One of these approaches is based on the use of chemical probes whose transformation by NO generates highly fluorescent derivatives, permitting detection of NO down to nanomolar concentrations. Here, we show that the cell-permeant diaminofluorophore 4-amino-5-methylamino-2′-7′-difluorofluorescein diacetate (DAF-FM-DA) can be used to detect NO production sites in a living vertebrate, the zebrafish Danio rerio. On Sturmian Graphs

AbstractIn this paper we define Sturmian graphs and we prove that all of them have a certain “counting” property. We show deep connections between this counting property and two conjectures, by Moser and by Zaremba, on the continued fraction expansion of real numbers. These graphs turn out to be the underlying graphs of compact directed acyclic word graphs of central Sturmian words. In order to prove this result, we give a characterization of the maximal repeats of central Sturmian words. We show also that, in analogy with the case of Sturmian words, these graphs converge to infinite ones.
