POSS Grafting on Polyethylene and Maleic Anhydride-Grafted Polyethylene by One-Step Reactive Melt Mixing

2018

This study reports the one-step reactive melt mixing preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid based on maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene and 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl-heptaisobutyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, (NPOSS), as well as on low-density polyethylene and allyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (1POSS) in dicumyl peroxide presence, which is believed to activate the unsaturation of the reactive functional group of POSS itself. The successful grafting of POSS molecules onto polymeric backbones was probed through rheological and spectroscopic analysis. Grafting of POSS molecules enhances their dispersion in the polymeric matrix as shown by morphological analysis. Moreover, the…

Fuzzy Set Theory as a methodological bridge between hard science and humanities

2014

In this paper, we will investigate the possible role of fuzzy set theory (FST), and more generally the ensemble of technologies and theoretical approaches known as soft computing, as a method- ological bridge between hard sciences and humanities. We will try, building on previous works, to investigate the “family links” between these disciplines and show how FST may be of help in promoting a connection between the “two cultures”. We will discuss Carnap and his paradox of explication, the dilemma between imagination and rigor according to Bateson, the problem of interdisciplinarity, and the consequences of precision and exactness.

GEOMETRIA: "MADRE SCIENZA"

2008

Convergence of Boobnov-Galerkin Method Exemplified

2004

In this Note, Boobnov–Galerkin’s method is proved to converge to an exact solution for an applied mechanics problem. We address in detail the interrelation of Boobnov–Galerkin method and the exact solution in the beam deflection problems. Namely, we show the coincidence of these two methods for clamped–clamped boundary conditions, using an alternative set of functions proposed by Filonenko-Borodich.12 Received 25 February 2003; accepted for publication 13 March 2004. Body forces and thermoelasticity in the SGBEM

2003

This paper proposes a revisiting of the displacement method performed through a domain substructuring into macro-zones named BelementsThis paper proposes a revisiting of the displacement method performed through a domain substructuring into macro-zones named Belements in the ambit of the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method. The external actions are the boundary forces and the constraint subsidings, as well as the body forces b and the anelastic strains ϑ . In order better to connect the method to the boundary geometry of each B-element the volume integrals of b and ϑ are transformed into line integrals in the discretized B-elements. The KARNAK sGbem program is utilized for some examp…

Perfluorocarbons–graphene oxide nanoplatforms as biocompatible oxygen reservoirs

2018

Abstract 3-Pentadecafluoroheptyl,5-perfluorophenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (FOX) molecules were attached onto a graphene oxide (GO) via a facile aromatic substitution in alkaline environment. This approach allows achieving high degree of functionalization under mild conditions. The covalent attachment of perfluoromoieties onto GO lamellae was confirmed by spectroscopic analyses. The performance of these nanoplatforms (GOF) as oxygen reservoirs was assessed at different concentrations and temperature. The results revealed that under physiologic conditions GO and FOX synergistically operate for increasing oxygen uptake and release, either from a thermodynamic and a kinetic point of view. Even at low…

Stability analysis of Beck's column over a fractional-order hereditary foundation

2018

This paper considers the case of Beck's column resting on a hereditary bed of independent springpots. The springpot possesses an intermediate rheological behaviour among linear spring and linear dashpot. It is defined by means of couple ( C β ,  β ) that characterize the material of the element and is ruled by a Caputo's fractional derivative. In this paper, we investigate the critical load of the column under the action of a follower load by means of a novel complex transform that allows to use the Routh–Hurwitz theorem in the complex half-plane for the stability analysis.

An Innovative Structural Dynamic Identification Procedure Combining Time Domain OMA Technique and GA

2022

In this paper an innovative and simple Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) method for structural dynamic identification is proposed. It combines the recently introduced Time Domain–Analytical Signal Method (TD–ASM) with the Genetic Algorithm (GA). Specifically, TD–ASM is firstly employed to estimate a subspace of candidate modal parameters, and then the GA is used to identify the structural parameters minimizing the fitness value returned by an appropriately introduced objective function. Notably, this method can be used to estimate structural parameters even for high damping ratios, and it also allows one to identify the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the structural excitat…

Coscienza e potere. Narrazioni attraverso il mito

2009

Global-Local Modeling of Guided-wave Scattering for Quantitative NDE

2019

Among the several NDE and SHM techniques, ultrasonic guided waves are very suitable for the inspection of wide structures and complex geometries. Their behavior and interaction with geometrical or potential defective discontinuities needs to be understood to assist the experimental set-up of NDE tests and to interpret the collected data for quantitative damage detection and structural characterization. The Global- Local method is utilized here to investigate the guided-wave scattering in presence of very complex geometries, involving multi-layered materials and various types of defects. The standard Finite Element (FE) approach discretizes the region with discontinuities, while the Semi-Ana…
