Bond characterization of monolithic and layered glass panels and ultrasonic tests to control glued surfaces

2019

Abstract An experimental investigation is presented regarding the compressive and shear strength of monolithic and PVB laminated glass elements connected by acrylic glue. Ultrasonic tests were also used to control the efficiency of glued surfaces of glass panels. Twenty-four triplets composed of three float glass elements glued with acrylic adhesive were prepared to perform bond tests. Of these twelve triplets were made with monolithic glass elements with a nominal thickness of 20 mm, while twelve were made with layered glass elements 20 mm thick. Three single elements of monolithic glass and three of layered glass were tested for compressive strength. Ultrasonic tests were performed on a s…

Organized crime and public spending: a panel data analysis

2018

The aim of this paper is to investigate, empirically, what components of public spending imply a decreasing effect on organized crime and what components create opportunities for organized crime, discussing also the role of government efficiency. Using a panel data analysis, the results show a strikingly consistent pattern for the EU Member States. Organized crime mainly operates in the distribution of government spending for local public goods and public provision of private services. There is a decreasing effect on organized crime of the public expenditure devoted to education and social policy. Government efficiency in public spending is beneficial to limit the opportunities of the organ…

Foreign policy and de-Europeanization under the M5S–League government: exploring the Italian behavior in the UN General Assembly

2021

This article explores the first declaredly populist and Eurosceptical Italian government’s role as a potential driver of de-Europeanization dynamics in Italian foreign policy. After describing the M5S–League government’s discursive de-Europeanization on core substantive EU values, the article focuses on multilateralism, a critical pillar of Italian foreign policy and a substantive norm of the European Union, and investigates the actual foreign policy conduct in the UN General Assembly. By analyzing the voting and sponsoring behavior of the M5S-League government, the article systematically assesses variations in de-Europeanization’s critical dimensions (culture of cooperation, repudiation of…

A theoretical link between gradient and nonlocal elasticity models, including higher order boundary conditions

2013

The paper presents a recently developed rational derivation of the strain gradient elasticity model from the nonlocal (or integral) model. This kind of derivations are generally recovered just by an expansion into a Taylor series of the nonlocal strain field up to a certain order, and then operating the integration (or averaging) over the spatial interaction domain. The latter procedure is fully consistent when the analysis is performed over an unbounded domain, but when a classical bounded domain is analyzed it lacks in reproducing the so-called higher-order boundary conditions. In the present contributions the complete derivation is achieved employing an extended version of the Principle …

Energy-Residual-Based approach to gradient plasticity

2008

The “energy-residual-based approach” mentioned in the title consists in a thermodynamically consistent procedure for the formulation of a phenomenological plasticity model of either strain gradient, or nonlocal (integral) type. The authors have developed this procedure on the last ten years. It seem therefore appropriate to present an update of this theory at this forum. For brevity we shell limit ourselves to strain gradient plasticity.

COMPARISON OF CRIMSON FOUNTAINGRASS AND DISS FIBRES AS AGGREGATES FOR CEMENT MORTARS

2019

The use of natural fibres in cement composites is an expanding research field as their use can improve the mechanical and thermal behavior of cement mortars and reduce their carbon footprint. In this paper two different wild grasses, i.e. Pennisetum Setaceum, also known as crimson fountaingrass, and Ampelodesmos Mauritanicus, also called diss, are used as source of natural fibres for cement mortars. The principal aim is to evaluate the possibility of using the more invasive crimson fountaingrass in place of diss inside cement based vegetable concrete. The two plants’ fibres have been characterized by means of electron microscopy, helium picnometry; moreover, the thermal conductivity of fibr…

Amplification of Interstory Drift and Velocity for the Passive Control of Structural Vibrations

2008

Mitigation of structural damage due to earthquake ground motion may be performed by inserting dampers in the structure. In order to enhance the damping effect various toggle brace configurations have been recently proposed. In this paper these equipments are analyzed in detail and compared with a new one here proposed. The analysis is performed by taking into account the inherent nonlinearities of the damper by means of stochastic analysis and validated by using time histories of recorder accelerograms and by the stochastic analysis using spectrum consistent power spectral density.

Since the Nineties of the nineteenth century, the scenario of an «evil of living» has been designed to be the «theme» of which the most significant poetic and prosaic…

Improved global-local model to predict guided-wave scattering patterns from discontinuities in complex parts

2019

Ultrasonic guided-wave testing can greatly benefit from (1) an ability to provide quantitative information on the damage that is being detected, and (2) an ability to select the best mode-frequency combination for maximum sensitivity to a given type of damage. Achieving these capabilities in complex structures (e.g. nonprismatic structures such as a stiffened panel in aerospace fuselages) is a nontrivial task. This paper will discuss an improved Global-Local (GL) method where the geometrical “local” discontinuity (e.g. the stiffener) is modelled by traditional FE discretization and the rest of the structure (“global” part) is modelled by Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) cross-sectional…

Global–local model for three-dimensional guided wave scattering with application to rail flaw detection

2021

This study presents a three-dimensional global–local formulation for the prediction of guided wave scattering from discontinuities (e.g. defects). The approach chosen utilizes the Semi-Analytical Finite Element method for the “global” portion of the waveguide, and a full Finite Element discretization for the “local” portion of the waveguide containing the discontinuity. The application of interest is the study of guided wave scattering from transverse head defects in rails. Theoretical scattering results are impossible to obtain in this case for a wide-frequency range. While three-dimensional Semi-Analytical Finite Element–Finite Element models for guided wave scattering studies have been …
