Fictional cinema is one of the cultural agents that shapes the international image of each country. It colonizes spectators' imagery, and it can influence their choice of tourist destinations. Spanish cinema's international diffusion has allowed the exhibition of movies that spread and renew the image of Spain in different ways. In this respect, we propose a three-fold typology of films focusing our attention on their content and the ways in which they build the image of Spain: Icon Films, Pastiche Films, and Tourist Poster Films. Nevertheless, the star system in Hollywood and other film industries, as well as other expressions of cult in mechanical art are to be considered as a 'deteriorated' but anyway important manifestations of religious or pseudoreligious consumption. This text introduces a monographic issue of the journal Archivos de la filmoteca on the star system today.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la concepción pictórica que se encuentra en la base del film Faust (F.W. Murnau, 1925). En este sentido, la fuerte permeación de referentes barrocos lleva a la dirección de fotografía del film a la concepción de encuadres plenos cuya máxima expresión sería la inmovilidad. Sin embargo, Murnau introduce un extraño dinamismo en el montaje que genera una dialéctica probablemente única en la historia del cine de los años veinte.

This detailed textual analysis of La revoltosa (1924) shows to what extent its maker, Florián Rey, mastered the modes of representation of his day: both elements of mise-en-scene and questions of standardized narrative forms befit contemporary film discourse. Here, as in other areas of cinema, the use of older techniques confirms that there was the vacillation out of which any formal system becomes consolidated. All of this proves that in the 1920s, in spite of precarious conditions for production, part of Spanish cinema was at an international level of filmmaking.
