Circular dichroism studies on the interaction of sulfonylureas with insulin
1976
The interaction of 5 sulfonylurea derivatives with insuline was investigated by means of circular dichroism measurements. It was found that all sulfonylureas investigated decrease the ellipticity band of insulin at 208 nm, whereas the band at 222 nm remains unaffected. It is suggested that these observations are due to a change of the insulin conformation, provoked by the interaction of the drugs with insulin. It is assumed that such an effect on the insulin conformation can influence the binding properties of insulin, e.g. in respect to the insulin aggregation, to the binding to insulin antibodies and to a bound, inactive form of insulin in the plasma. Some other drugs have similar, but mo…
Chiroptical Phenomena in Reverse Micelles: The Case of (1R,2S)-Dodecyl (2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium Bromide (DMEB)
2014
(1R,2S)-Dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB) aggregates dispersed in carbon tetrachloride have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at various surfactant concentration and water-to-surfactant molar ratio. Experimental data indicate that, even at the lowest investigated concentration and in absence of added water, DMEB molecules associate in supramolecular assemblies. At higher DMEB concentration the aggregates can confine water molecules, making it plausible to think that DMEB form reverse micelles and that water molecules are quite uniformly dist…

COMPARATIVE-STUDY ON INCLUSION-COMPOUNDS OF 4-BIPHENYLACETIC ACID WITH BETA-CYCLODEXTRIN, HYDROXYPROPYLATED-BETA-CYCLODEXTRINS, AND METHYLATED-BETA-C…
1994
AbstractThe inclusion behavior of Hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin (HP-β-Cyd) and of methylated-β-Cyclodextrins, heptakis-(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-Cyclodextrin (DM-β-Cyd) and heptakis-(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-Cyclodextrin (TM-β-Cyd), in solution and solid state was compared with that of natural β-Cyclodextrin (β-Cyd) using an anti-inflammatory drug, 4-biphenylacetic acid (BPAA), as a guest molecule. The solubility of BPAA with β-Cyd and β-Cyd derivatives in aqueous solution were determined. Stability constants were calculated by phase solubility method at various pH values and temperatures. The formation of inclusion complexes with β-Cyd and β-Cyd derivatives in the solid slate were confirmed by infra…
Compositional dependence of element-specific magnetic moments in Ni2MnGa films
2009
Element-specific magnetic moments were investigated for epitaxial Ni2Mn1+xGa1−x and (Ni2MnGa)1−x(Co2FeSi)x Heusler films using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray circular magnetic dichroism in transmission. The epitaxial films of the Ni2MnGa-derived compositions were prepared by dc-sputtering on Al2O3 substrates at 773 K. X-ray diffraction confirms a (1 1 0) oriented growth. An increase in the Mn concentration reduces the magnetic spin moment of both Mn and Ni. An increase in the content of Co2FeSi in the Ni2MnGa compound leads to an increase in the Mn and Ni spin moments and to a decrease in Tm for 5% Co2FeSi and finally to a suppression of the phase transition for 20% Co2FeSi. The or…
Electronic structure of the austenitic and martensitic state of magnetocaloric Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy films
2013
Changes of the electronic and magnetic structure near the martensitic phase transition of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys doped with Co are investigated by experiment and theory. The nonstoichiometric Ni${}_{48}$Co${}_{5}$Mn${}_{35}$In${}_{12}$ epitaxial film undergoes a transition from a weakly magnetic martensitic phase below ${T}_{m}=350$ K to a ferromagnetic austenitic phase above ${T}_{m}$. Element-specific magnetic moments and the unoccupied density of states function is investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We find an antiparallel alignment of Mn and Ni/Co magnetic moments in both phases. The electronic structure is calculated using the SPR-KKR Green's function approach consi…
Recombinant water-soluble chlorophyll protein from Brassica oleracea var. Botrys binds various chlorophyll derivatives.
2003
A gene coding for water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (WSCP) from Brassica oleracea var. Botrys has been used to express the protein, extended by a hexahistidyl tag, in Escherichia coli. The protein has been refolded in vitro to study its pigment binding behavior. Recombinant WSCP was found to bind two chlorophylls (Chls) per tetrameric protein complex but no carotenoids in accordance with previous observations with the native protein [Satoh, H., Nakayama, K., Okada, M. (1998) J. Biol. Chem. 273, 30568-30575]. WSCP binds Chl a, Chl b, bacteriochlorophyll a, and the Zn derivative of Chl a but not pheophytin a, indicating that the central metal ion in Chl is essential for binding. WSCP …
Eliminating self-reference from Grelling's and Zwicker's paradoxes
2014
The goal of this paper is to present Yabloesque versions of Grelling¿s and Zwicker¿s paradoxes concerning the notions of ¿heterological¿ and ¿hypergame¿ respectively. We will offer counterparts of these paradoxes that do not seem to involve self-reference or vicious circularity.
First-Principles Calculations of Angle-Resolved and Spin-Resolved Photoemission Spectra of Cr(110) Surfaces at the2p−3dCr Resonance
2013
A first principles approach for spin- and angle-resolved resonant photoemission is developed within multiple scattering theory and applied to a Cr(110) surface at the 2p-3d resonance. The resonant photocurrent from this nonferromagnetic system is found to be strongly spin polarized by circularly polarized light, in agreement with experiments on antiferromagnetic and magnetically disordered systems. By comparing the antiferromagnetic and Pauli-paramagnetic phases of Cr, we explicitly show that the spin polarization of the photocurrent is independent of the existence of local magnetic moments, solving a long-standing debate on the origin of such polarization. New spin polarization effects are…
Full field automated evaluation of the quarter wave plate retardation by phase stepping technique
2002
Quarter wave plates are optical elements commonly used in photoelasticity to obtain circularly polarized light. They divide the incident light field into two linearly polarized orthogonal components with a phase difference of a quarter of the light wavelength. Due to the tolerance in manufacturing, however, the actual phase shifting produced by the plates is affected by an error, which noticeably influences the photoelastic measurements performed by means of various automated methods. This paper presents a technique, based on the phase stepping method, for the full field automatic evaluation of the quarter wave plate error.
