Spin and Orbital Magnetic Moments of FePt Thin Films

2006

The magnetic moments of disordered and ordered L10 Fe50Pt50 films were investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and spin polarized full relativistic Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (SPRKKR) calculations. The measurements showed that the spin magnetic moments of Fe in both ordered and disordered films were similar with a lower value than that obtained by SPRKKR calculations. Both films however showed larger orbital moments of Fe compared to the calculations. It is suggested that the spin magnetic moment of Fe in FePt thin films was insensitive to L10 ordering.

Polarization phenomena in a laser coherently pumped by a linearly polarized field

1998

The field intensity and polarization behaviour of an optically pumped laser is investigated in different operating conditions. For a linearly polarized pump field, a strong gain anisotropy is induced which favours generation of light with a polarization parallel to that of the pump field. Thus gain anisotropy can be counterbalanced by cavity-loss anisotropy only at low pumping field intensities, and the interplay between both types of anisotropy leads to polarization switching phenomena. In contrast to the case of the incoherently pumped laser, the decay rate for the magnetic dipole induced on the J = 1 level plays a minor role in determining the polarization dynamics. The influence of a lo…

Impact excitation of 42 P-potassium by polarized electrons

1986

The present work investigates the 42 P impact excitation of potassium by longitudinally polarized electrons. Exchange scattering causes a polarization transfer from the primary electron beam to the ensemble of excited atoms which results in a non zero circular polarization of the fluorescence light emitted in foreward direction. The experimental values of light polarization agree well with values calculated using close coupling data of Moores.

Maximal slicings in spherical symmetry: Local existence and construction

2011

We show that any spherically symmetric spacetime locally admits a maximal spacelike slicing and we give a procedure allowing its construction. The construction procedure that we have designed is based on purely geometrical arguments and, in practice, leads to solve a decoupled system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations. We have explicitly built up maximal foliations in Minkowski and Friedmann spacetimes. Our approach admits further generalizations and efficient computational implementation. As by product, we suggest some applications of our work in the task of calibrating Numerical Relativity complex codes, usually written in Cartesian coordinates.

Analyzing the enforcement of a high-spin ground state for a metallacrown single-molecule magnet

2016

We have studied element-selective magnetic properties of the hetero- and homometallic metallacrowns $\mathrm{Cu}{(\mathrm{II})}_{2}[12\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{MC}}_{YN(Shi)}\ensuremath{-}4]$ ($Y=\text{Cu}$, Fe, in short ${\mathrm{CuCu}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{CuFe}}_{4}$). These metallacrowns comprise four Fe or Cu ions surrounding a central Cu ion. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we have probed local symmetries, electronic configuration, orbital and spin magnetic moments of the magnetic ions. The ratio between the Cu and Fe moment of $\ensuremath{-}0.11$ is independent of temperature in the range of 15 K to 90 K. The Cu moment shows antiparallel to the Fe moment. For ${\mathrm{CuCu}}_{4}…

Transverse-Momentum Distributions and Spherical Symmetry

2011

Transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are studied in the framework of quark models. In particular, quark model relations among TMDs are reviewed and their physical origin is discussed in terms of rotational-symmetry properties of the nucleon state in its rest frame.

On Green's function for spherically symmetric problems of transfer of polarized radiation

2005

Analytic expressions for Green's function describing the process of transfer of polarized radiation in homogeneous isotropic infinite medium in case of spherical symmetry and nonconservative scattering are obtained. Spherical eigenfunctions of the homogeneous transfer equation are not used, due to their strong divergence; instead, direct transformation from plane-parallel to spherical symmetry is carried out, leading to convergent solutions. The possible existence of generalized eigenfunctions of homogeneous transfer equation is accounted for.

Measurement of Helicity-Dependent Photoabsorption Cross Sections on the Neutron from 815 to 1825 MeV

2005

Helicity-dependent total photoabsorption cross sections on the deuteron have been measured for the first time at ELSA (Bonn) in the photon energy range from 815 to 1825 MeV. Circularly polarized tagged photons impinging on a longitudinally polarized LiD target have been used together with a highly efficient 4pi detector system. The data around 1 GeV are not compatible with predictions from existing multipole analyses. From the measured energy range an experimental contribution to the GDH integral on the neutron of [33.9 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 4.5(syst)] microb is extracted.

Conversion of bright magneto-optical resonances into dark resonances at fixed laser frequency forD2excitation of atomic rubidium

2012

Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances on the hyperfine transitions belonging to the ${D}_{2}$ line of rubidium were changed from bright to dark resonances by changing the laser power density of the single exciting laser field or by changing the vapor temperature in the cell. In one set of experiments atoms were excited by linearly polarized light from an extended cavity diode laser with polarization vector perpendicular to the light's propagation direction and magnetic field, and laser-induced fluorescence was observed along the direction of the magnetic field, which was scanned. A low-contrast bright resonance was observed at low laser power densities when the laser was tuned to the ${F}_{g…

Imaging of SN 1993J

2005

SN 1993J has been imaged with VLBI, and its angular expansion monitored, for almost ten years. The images show shell-like radio structures with almost circular symmetry. SN 1993J expands according to models of shock excited emission. The angular expansion has a changing deceleration rate and is best modeled with two different slopes. The swept-up mass estimate at an age of 3159 days (∼0.4 M⨀), comparable to the low-mass envelope, favors a binary scenario. The observed spectral index of SN 1993J has slowly flattened since age 1000 days onward (α has changed from −1 to −0.67 at an age of 2820 days).
