Integrating Circularity in the Sustainability Assessment of Asphalt Mixtures

2020

Rising concerns about the impacts that the road engineering industry is imposing to the environment have redirected national road authorities to firmly re-consider the sustainability implications of their operations. Lately, though, sustainability has established a forceful correlation with the Circular Economy and its principles. The road engineering industry, therefore, is moving towards more circular approaches. However, this is occurring without the assessment of the potential impacts of such a transition. For this reason, in this study, a composite indicator, namely, Environmental Sustainability and Circularity indicator (ESCi), for investigating the potential effects that increased ci…

Grounds and Challenges for Implementing a Circular Economy in the European Road Transport Sector

2017

Environmental challenges, especially in the form of resource depletion, pollution and greenhouse gas emission, are very important challenges for the socio-economic development. For this reason, the concept of a circular economy has been developed and is being implemented in different areas. In 2015, the European Union adopted the Circular Economy Package consisting of an “EU Action Plan for the Circular Economy”, presenting a set of actions aimed at achieving objectives of the circular economy in Europe. The goal of the paper is to describe and discuss key challenges facing implementation of the concept of the circular economy in the European road transport sector. First, the concept of a c…

Magnetic Domain Imaging with a Photoemission Microscope

1997

ABSTRACTPhotoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) has proven to be a versatile analytical technique in surface science. When operated with circularly polarized light in the soft x-ray regime, however, photoemission microscopy offers a unique combination of magnetic and chemical information. Exploiting the high brilliance and circular polarization available at a helical undulator beamline, the lateral resolution in the imaging of magnetic domain structures may be pushed well into the sub-micrometer range. Using a newly designed photoemission microscope we show that under these circumstances not only domains, but also domain walls can be selectively investigated. The high sensitivity of the te…

Selective G-quadruplex stabilizers: Schiff-base metal complexes with anticancer activity

2014

The affinity of three square-planar nickel(II) (1), copper(II) (2) and zinc(II) (3) Schiff-base complexes for wild-type human telomeric (h-Telo) and protooncogene c-myc G-quadruplex (G4) DNA was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and circular dichroism. DNA-binding constants (Kb) were determined by spectrophotometric titrations for both G4-DNA and B-DNA. The results obtained point out that the three metal complexes selectively bind G4-DNA with higher affinity, up to two orders of magnitude, with respect to B-DNA. The nickel(II) complex 1 was found to be the most effective G4-DNA stabilizer and the Kb values decrease in the order 1 > 2 ≈ 3. Innovative computational investigat…

A closed-form solution for natural frequencies of thin-walled cylinders with clamped edges

2016

Abstract This paper presents an approximate closed-form solution for the free-vibration problem of thin-walled clamped–clamped cylinders. The used indefinite equations of motion are classic. They derive from Reissner׳s version of Love׳s theory, properly modified with Donnell׳s assumptions, but an innovative approach has been used to find the equations of natural frequencies, based on a solving technique similar to Rayleigh׳s method, on the Hamilton׳s principle and on a proper constructions of the eigenfuctions. Thanks to the used approach, given the geometric and mechanical characteristics of the cylinder, the model provides the natural frequencies via a sequence of explicit algebraic equat…

Sustainable, circular and innovative value chains using growing substrata alternative to peat for the cultivation of nutraceutical species

2019

The modern agricultural system is wasteful, with Europe generating some 700 million tonnes of agricultural and food waste each year. In the context of the agri-food chain, the ‘circular economy’ aims to reduce waste while also making best use of the ‘wastes’ produced by using economically viable processes and procedures to increase their value. In this paper we will try to frame the key issues associated with food waste into the emerging bioeconomy and circular-economic mode, suggesting that these three concepts are intertwined, and considering them unitarily might provide win-win solutions that minimize wastage, promote income growth and job creation, and prompt sustainable local developme…

Exploitation of food processing discards as main ingredients of sustainable feeds for the aquaculture of Paracentrotus lividus

2022

Sea urchin gonads are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, leading to an increase of fishing pressure and resulting in the decline of natural stock of commercially valuable species. Aquaculture could be the best solution to fill the gap between market demand and natural supply, but in a context of Sustainable Development and Blue Growth, aquaculture sector is called to reduce its ecological footprint. Aquaculture feeds are produced using ingredients obtained from natural resources already overexploited by human activities, such as fish meal and fish oil that are considered the best source of lipids, or cereal meals that are included as protein sources. In this context, in order…
