Validare le pratiche collaborative per l’economia circolare urbana: il punto di vista del design.

2021

The article presents the results of the research activity carried out within the framework of the European project H2020 REFLOW, which aims to build an integrated approach for the development of innovative participatory practices dedicated to urban circular metabolisms. As a result of the survey conducted on the application of collaborative models for the urban circular economy, it emerged that there is no shared operational strategy that can be adopted for the circular development of complex systems, such as cities. Based on this premise, this paper offers a new perspective on how to build and validate a transitional pathway for the development of circular cities through the adoption of a …

Anatomy and physiology of peripheral and central vestibular system

2021

The vestibular system includes different anatomical structures and physiological pathways. In the first part of this chapter, we will briefly introduce the main anatomical constituents, i.e., vestibule, semicircular canals, vestibular ganglia and nerve, vestibular nuclei, flocculo-nodular lobe of cerebellum and other structures in the brain stem. In the second parts, we will discuss the pathways generated by signals transduced by vestibular structures. Briefly, the bony labyrinth is lined with the endolymph-containing membranous labyrinth, showing two chambers (utricle and saccule) and three semicircular canals (horizontal, anterior, and posterior). Each canal contains a receptor organ call…

Calcium-dependent conformational changes of membrane-bound Ebola fusion peptide drive vesicle fusion

2003

AbstractThe fusogenic subdomain of the Ebola virus envelope glycoprotein is an internal sequence located ca. 20 residues downstream the N-terminus of the glycoprotein transmembrane subunit. Partitioning of the Ebola fusion peptide into membranes containing phosphatidylinositol in the absence of Ca2+ stabilizes an α-helical conformation, and gives rise to vesicle efflux but not vesicle fusion. In the presence of millimolar Ca2+ the membrane-bound peptide adopts an extended β-structure, and induces inter-vesicle mixing of lipids. The peptide conformational polymorphism may be related to the flexibility of the virus–cell intermembrane fusogenic complex.

A MODEL FOR VESTIBULAR FUNCTION IN ALTERED GRAVITATIONAL STATES

1979

ABSTRACT During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g . The proper function of the otolith system depends entirely on the presence of a gravitational force vector of 9.8/m/sec2 direc…

Treatment of Specific Types of Nystagmus

2007

■ The function of the ocular motor system is to hold images stable on the fovea. The vestibular system and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) also play an important role in this function. The VOR connects the peripheral vestibular endorgans – the semicircular canals and otoliths – with their appropriate pair of eye muscles via a three-neuronal arc.

General remarks on the role of the vestibular system in weightlessness

1987

Different methods are described to experimentally achieve weightlessness. Since the function of the otolith system depends on the presence of contact forces opposing gravity, it is disabled in weightlessness and may send misleading positional information to the brain. Without the contributions of the otolith system it is difficult in space to distinguish self-motion from object motion. Furthermore, the disintegration of information from the neck position receptors from those of the otolith system can lead to additional illusory positional sensations. Since the function of the semicircular canal system in previous space flights was found to be essentially undisturbed, the vestibular experime…

Analytical chemistry on many-center chiral compounds based on vibrational circular dichroism: Absolute configuration assignments and determination of…

2019

The absolute configuration of a chiral molecule is key to its biological activity. Being able to find out what this configuration is, is thus crucial for a wide range of applications. The difficulties associated with such a determination steeply rise as the number of chiral centers in a given compound becomes larger. Concurrently, it becomes increasingly more challenging to determine the levels and identity of potential stereochemical contaminants in a given sample with one and the same technique, leading in practice to extensive and laborious efforts employing multiple analytical techniques. Here, experimental and theoretical studies based on Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) are presen…

Rhythmic Island: Latvian Migrants in Guernsey and their Enfolded Patterns of Space-Time Mobility

2015

Rather than a marginal activity, visiting friends and relatives (VFR) is a fundamental part of the migrant experience. We illustrate this assertion by an in-depth study of Latvian labour migration to Guernsey. Since the 1990s, low incomes and high unemployment in post-Soviet Latvia combine with niche-specific labour demands in Guernsey to create migratory flows of mainly female workers. The small-scale nature of this circular migration system allows a deeper theorisation of the many linkages between migration and VFR. In particular we deploy time-geography and rhythmanalysis to explore the various ways that migration and VFR are enfolded within each other, within the life-courses of the pro…
