Supporting group decision makers to locate temporary relief distribution centres after sudden-onset disasters

2020

International audience; In the humanitarian response, multiple decision-makers (DMs) need to collaborate in various problems, such as locating temporary relief distribution centres (RDCs). Several studies have argued that maximising demand coverage, reducing logistics costs and minimising response time are among the critical objectives when locating RDCs after a sudden-onset disaster. However, these objectives are often conflicting and the trade-offs can considerably complicate the situation for finding a consensus. To address the challenge and support the DMs, we suggest investigating the stability of non-dominated alternatives derived from a multi-objective model based on Monte Carlo Simul…

Channel forms recovery in an ephemeral river after gravel mining (Palancia River, Eastern Spain)

2017

[EN] During the 1970s, the Palancia River was intensively affected by gravel mining instream. This activity completely destroyed the fluvial forms, devastating the original wandering pattern. At the end of the 1980s, gravel mining ceased and the river started a process of recovery, only altered by several clearing operations. The aim of this work is to describe these processes of change, analyzing the river's morphosedimentary conditions through a GIS analysis of aerial photographs previous to, simultaneous with, and subsequent to the intense gravel mining activity. Results explain the current difficulties of some ephemeral rivers to recover their original forms, because of the sediment and…

Incised valleys and tidal seaways: the example of the Miocene Uzès-Castillon basin, SE France.

2012

Abstract The sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Miocene deposits of the Uzès-Castillon basin are revisited. This basin, located in SE France at the junction between the perialpine foreland basin and the W Mediterranean margin, sits in a syncline that formed during the latest Cretaceous Pyrenean tectonic phase. It records the succession of shallow-water mixed siliciclastic to dominantly bioclastic carbonates that alternate with shelf marls. The clastic carbonates were accumulated as a stack of subtidal dunes and bars that were formed by tidal currents channelized in a seaway following the syncline axis. The marls indicate deposition in more protected and locally deeper waters, as interflu…

The (de)politicisation of nuclear power: The Finnish discussion after Fukushima

2017

When the Fukushima accident occurred in March 2011, Finland was at the height of a nuclear renaissance, with the Government’s decision-in-principle in 2010 to allow construction of two new nuclear reactors. This article examines the nuclear power debate in Finland after Fukushima. We deploy the concepts of (de)politicisation and hyperpoliticisation in the analysis of articles in the country’s main newspaper. Our analysis indicates that Finnish nuclear exceptionalism manifested in the safety-related depoliticising and the nation’s prosperity-related hyperpoliticisation arguments of the pro-nuclear camp. The anti-nuclear camp used politicisation strategies, such as economic arguments, to sho…

The geological roots of South America: 4.1 Ga and 3.7 Ga zircon crystals discovered in N.E. Brazil and N.W. Argentina

2015

International audience; We present new LA-ICP-MS in situ geochronological results for seven Eoarchean zircons dated at 3.7 Ga coming from Cretaceous ash layers of NW Argentina and one Hadean single crystal sampled within the São Francisco Craton in NE Brazil. This zircon comprises a zoned magmatic core dated at 4.1 Ga surrounded by a 1.9 Ga overgrowth related to Paleoproterozoic reworking. This Hadean age is consistent with previously published Nd model ages on orthogneisses from the same domain. These two results represent among the oldest geological witnesses discovered to date in South America, which demonstrates the occurrence of a primitive crust. The contrasting age patterns recorded …

Simulation of nitrous oxide emissions from wheat-cropped soils using CERES

2005

Estimation of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from arable soils, in relation to crop fertilization, is essential to devise strategies to mitigate the impact of agriculture on global warming. This paper presents the development and test of a N2O model resulting from the linkage of a dynamic soil-crop simulation model (CERES) with two sub-models of N2O production and reduction in soils. These sub-models (NOE and NGAS) account for both the nitrification and denitrification pathways. The resulting models (CERES–NOE and CERES–NGAS) were tested against experimental data collected on three contrasting wheat-cropped soils representative of the Beauce agricultural region in France. Although the input …

Introducing the Human Factor in Predictive Modelling: a Work in Progress

2012

International audience; In this paper we present the results of a study into integrating socio-cultural factors into predictive modelling. So far, predictive modelling has largely neglected the social and cultural dimensions of past landscapes. To maintain its value for archaeological research, therefore, it needs new methodologies, concepts and theories. For this study, we have departed from the methodology developed in the 1990s during the Archaeomedes Project. In this project, cross-regional comparisons of settlement location factors were made by analyzing the environmental context of Roman settlements in the French Rhône Valley. For the current research, we expanded the set of variables…

« On-the-go » multispectral imaging system to characterize the development of vineyard foliage

2015

International audience; In Precision Viticulture, multispectral imaging systems are currently used in remote sensing for vineyard vigor characterization but few are employed in proximal sensing. This work presents the potential of a proximal multispectral imaging system mounted on a track-laying tractor equipped with a Greenseeker RT-100 to provide an NDVI index. The camera acquired visible and near-infrared images which were calibrated in reflectance. Vegetation indices were computed and compared to Greenseeker data. From two of the resulting datasets, a spatio-temporal study of foliage description through both optical systems is presented. This first study assessed the proximal imagery re…

Carbon sequestration potential of Italian orchards and vineyards

2017

From 2004 to 2012 carbon (C) fluxes between the soil-vegetation system and the atmosphere in apple, grape, olive and orange orchards planted in different Italian regions were measured. Above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) ranged from 4 (olive) to 9 (apple) Mg C ha-1. Alley grass contribution to total ANPP significantly varied among the systems, reaching a maximum of 60% in vineyards. The harvest index ranged from 46% for apple, to 58% for orange, 60% for grape and 41% for olive, while abscised leaves accounted for 30% of ANPP, on average. Soil respiration fluxes ranged from 6 (orange) to 10 (grape) Mg C ha-1. Results indicate the potential of these fruit crop to sequester atmospheri…

Cross-taxon congruence and relationships to stand characteristics of vascular plants, bryophytes, polyporous fungi and beetles in mature managed bore…

2018

Abstract Multi-taxon analyses of ecological assemblages are needed when the effects of forestry on biodiversity are examined. Management usually simplifies the structure of forests, which results in quantitative and qualitative declines in many microhabitats and species associated with them. In Fennoscandia, most forests are managed for industrial use of wood, but relatively little is known about the relationships between structural components and biodiversity in managed forests. Abundance, composition or species number of different species groups reacting similarly to variation in their environment would be a useful tool e.g. in estimating responses of species that are more difficult to sa…
