The natural forest vegetation in the territory of the western provinces of Sicily (Palermo, Trapani and Agrigento) has almost completely disappeared. This area coincides with the ancient administrative ter- ritorial unit that precedes the division into three "valleys" of the most inhabited island of the Mediterranean: it is the Val di Mazara, remembered by archaeologists as "Punic Eparchy". ENSURE (European Sustainable Urbanisation through port city Regeneration) is a targeted analysis aimed at providing better insights into the potential regional impacts of port city regeneration and a better understanding of the appropriate methods and tools. Achieving sustainable development goals in port cities is an increasingly challenging task as the trend is toward their expansion for global competition, thus increasing their impacts on soil, atmosphere, water, and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The present contribution proposes to explore the Building with Nature approach developed by EcoShape and Deltares in the Dutch context through the comparison of case studies and to highlight some critical issues in its transferability to the Italian context.

Nei prossimi anni le città sono chiamate a superare la dipendenza dai combustibili fossili e a ridefinire il proprio modello di funzionamento energetico e ambientale, che rischia di entrare in crisi a causa di un'intensa urbanizzazione, della crescita di emissioni di CO2, della riduzione del peso delle easy oil.
