Living the urban challenge : sustainable development and social sustainability in two southern megacities

2007

Kehitysmaiden nopea kaupungistuminen ja miljoonakaupunkien voimakas kasvu luovat haasteita kestävään kehitykseen tähtäävälle suunnittelulle. Kansainvälisissä kehitysohjelmissa on pyritty turvaamaan suurkaupunkien taloudelliset ja ympäristölliset tavoitteet. Kestävän kehityksen sosiaalinen ulottuvuus on usein rajattu kaupunkien tarjoamiin sosiaalipalveluihin.- Ympäristön säilyttäminen tuleville sukupolville ei onnistu vain talouteen, ympäristöön ja palveluihin kohdistuvilla teknisillä toimilla. Tämä johtuu etelän suurkaupungeille tyypillisestä räikeästä sosiaalisesta eriarvoisuudesta. Suurkaupunkien suunnittelussa tulisi analysoida sellaisia sosiaalisia haasteita, jotka heikentävät kaupunkie…

The Spatial Overlap of Police Calls Reporting Street-Level and Behind-Closed-Doors Crime: A Bayesian Modeling Approach

2021

Traditionally, intimate-partner violence has been considered a special type of crime that occurs behind closed doors, with different characteristics from street-level crime. The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial overlap of police calls reporting street-level and behind-closed-doors crime. We analyzed geocoded police calls in the 552 census-block groups of the city of Valencia, Spain, related to street-level crime (N = 26,624) and to intimate-partner violence against women (N = 11,673). A Bayesian joint model was run to analyze the spatial overlap. In addition, two Bayesian hierarchical models controlled for different neighborhood characteristics to analyze the relative risks. Resu…

DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE METROPOLITAN AREAS USING A MULTI-SCALE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects. In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the relationship between settlement density and energy consumption). Interestingly, the overly compact city also has this effect as it may generate traffic flows for accessing green and leisure areas, or changes of residence due…

Stratégie d'aménagement pour le développement durable d'aires métropolitaines par un système multi-scalaire d'aide à la décision : l'exemple de Vienne

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects (e.g. pedestrian-friendly environments, well-balanced public and private transport modes, efficient street networks, land use, movement economy; access for all to jobs, retail, services; healthcare, culture and leisure). In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the rela…

Assessing travel time-based accessibility to outdoor ice skating fields for children in Helsinki during the COVID-19 pandemic

2022

This paper was written within the research project called “Equality in suburban physical activity environments, YLLI” (in Finnish: Yhdenvertainen liikunnallinen lähiö, YLLI) funded by the Suburban Programme 2020–2022 (in Finnish: Lähiöohjelma 2020–2022, decision number VN/10837/2020). Informal sport is central to Finnish children’s leisure and physical activity time. This paper aims to build a better understanding of the travel time-based accessibility to informal sports facilities, specifically to ice skating fields, for children and adolescents (aged 7–19) in the city of Helsinki. We focused on the winter of 2020–2021 because COVID-19 restrictions on indoor activities resulted in ice skat…

Preservice teachers’ training through microteaching experience

2020

The efficient teaching and the reflexive one were long recognized as desirable purposes of teachers’ training programs. Several studies demonstrated that simulated experiences inside university paths are suitable means to achieve that aim to have prepared teachers to become efficient and reflexive teachers. One of the methods more common to provide experience for teachers in training is microteaching. The video-registration and the methodologies that use of it are increasingly used in the professional training of future teachers. The teacher's professionalism requests, in addition to theoretical or disciplinary knowledge, the ability to mobilize knowledge to organize effective responses to …

The Territorial Dimension of Living Lab Approaches: Starting the European “Participant Observatory”

2011

Territory production can be intended as any process of spatial transformation deriving from a sustainable and reciprocal dialogue between local communities and their spatial context along history time; the territory is a dynamic but durable balance between human settlements and their environments. Territory intended in this way - maybe the major competitive factor of regions and their economic actors too - depends less on merely technological advances, rather than socio-technical innovations able to generate better life quality in cities and regions. This is why in the CIP project “Periphèria”, started in November 2010, a European Observatory of LLs and Smart Cities will be set up, conceive…

Turismo musical: conceptualización e implicaciones territoriales. Un análisis exploratorio de los procesos de coordinación turístico-musicales de la …

2023

Some important territories in Central countries have been offering high-value musical activities to their residents for the last two decades, which also attract visitors and therefore generate tourism. In order to address the conceptualization of musical tourism as a general objective, the thesis conducts an in-depth review of the literature and proposes an initial social, economic, and territorial analysis of music and its international evolution, as well as in Spain, where tourism activity constitutes a possible higher evolution for music and requires a local network with coordination relationships between public and private agents. However, there is little empirical evidence and academic…
