Gaia-ESO Survey. Trumpler 23

2017

Trumpler 23 is a moderately populated, intermediate-age open cluster within the solar circle at a R_GC_~6kpc. It is in a crowded field very close to the Galactic plane and the color-magnitude diagram shows significant field contamination and possible differential reddening; it is a relatively understudied cluster for these reasons, but its location makes it a key object for determining Galactic abundance distributions. New data from the Gaia-ESO Survey enable the first ever radial velocity and spectroscopic metallicity measurements for this cluster. We aim to use velocities to isolate cluster members, providing more leverage for determining cluster parameters. Gaia-ESO Survey data for 167 p…

KELT-9b radial velocity curve

2019

In the framework of the GAPS project, we observed the planet-hosting star KELT-9 (A-type star, vsini~110km/s) with the HARPS-N spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. In this work we analyse the spectra and the extracted radial velocities, to constrain the physical parameters of the system and to detect the planetary atmosphere of KELT-9b. We extracted from the high-resolution optical spectra the mean stellar line profiles with an analysis based on the Least Square Deconvolution technique. Then, we computed the stellar radial velocities with a method optimized for fast rotators, by fitting the mean stellar line profile with a purely rotational profile instead of using a Gaussian f…

ESPRESSO radial velocities of HE0107-5240

2020

The vast majority of the known stars of ultra low metallicity ([Fe/H]<-4.5) are known to be enhanced in carbon, and belong to the 'low-carbon band' (A(C)=log(C/H)+12~7.6). It is generally, although not universally, accepted that this peculiar chemical composition reflects the chemical composition of the gas cloud out of which these stars were formed. The first ultra-metal-poor star discovered, HE 0107-5240, is also enhanced in carbon and belongs to the 'low-carbon band'. It has recently been claimed to be a long-period binary, based on radial velocity measurements. It has also been claimed that this binarity may explain its peculiar composition as being due to mass transfer to a former AGB …

Acute toxicity of experimental fertilizers made of blood meal, spent coffee ground and biomass ash

2017

Perceived reason to hinder ACAP increase

2014

We derive through literature review that lack of internal R&D investment, lack of contribution into absorptive capacity (ACAP) nurturing at the initial phase of a project, and lack of adequate training prevent ACAP improvement. We conduct 41 interviews using a case study method on four organizations. Based on the empirical findings, it is revealed that most of practitioners know how ACAP can be improved. But still, they do not offer the important incentives and follow some traditional ways of performing their tasks. We further explore what prevents practitioners from implementing practices towards ACAP improvement. From our empirical findings we identify and analyze perceived reasons that h…

Estimating Tempo and Metrical Features by Tracking the Whole Metrical Hierarchy

2013

Meter is known to play a paramount role in the aesthetic appreciation of music, yet computational modelling remains deficient compared to other dimensions of music analysis. Classical audio-based methods detect the temporal repartition of notes, leading to an onset detection curve that is further analysed, in a second step, for periodicity estimation. Current state of the art in onset detection, based on energy and spectral flux, cannot handle complex but common musical configurations such as dense orchestral textures. Our proposed im-provement of the flux method can detect new notes while ignoring spectral fluctuation produced by vibrato. Concerning periodicity estimation, we demonstrate t…

Computation of flow velocity in gravel bed channels

2002

Accurate estimate of flow-velocity profile is of crucial importance both for scientific purposes and for solving numerous engineering problems that include, among others, sediment transport, contaminant transport, flow resistance evaluation. This paper presents a new empirical equation to represent the vertical velocity profile. The proposed equation is essentially a modified form of the well-known logarithm law of the wall and contains three parameters having a clear physical meaning. The applicability of the equation and its accuracy assessment for different hydraulic conditions, including non-uniform conditions, is verified by using experimental data obtained by different sources. The va…

Selective breeding for endurance running capacity affects cognitive but not motor learning in rats

2012

The ability to utilize oxygen has been shown to affect a wide variety of physiological factors often considered beneficial for survival. As the ability to learn can be seen as one of the core factors of survival in mammals, we studied whether selective breeding for endurance running, an indication of aerobic capacity, also has an effect on learning. Rats selectively bred over 23 generations for their ability to perform forced treadmill running were trained in an appetitively motivated discrimination-reversal classical conditioning task, an alternating T-maze task followed by a rule change (from a shift-win to stay-win rule) and motor learning task. In the discrimination-reversal and T-maze …

Long-transient conoscopic pattern technique

1999

0038-1098; Recent results on laser induced anisotropy in terbium gallium garnet are extended to the dynamic regime. We observed that the characteristic conoscopic pattern formation time presents a quadratic dependence on the beam size. The observed pattern intensity is accounted for by a simple analytical formula. The transient refractive index change due to thermal stress in the terbium gallium garnet is determined. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
