Does fragility of States affect realization of Education for all? An empirical essay
2009
More than one child out three, in the world, who don't access to school live in countries which are in conflict or which have governments non-engaged in politics of poverty reduction or which lacks of operating capacity. Given this, in these fragile States, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, universal primary schooling will be off target for 2015, so invalidate the Millennium Development Goals. Thus, does fragility of States constraints, in a practical way, the goal of Education for all? In this paper, explanations are provided and empirically tested using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). From the results, several types of fragilities represent major obstacles to achieving UPE. According …

Minding the Gaps : The Role of Finnish Civil Society Organizations in the Labour Market Integration of Migrants
2021
AbstractThe growing role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in welfare service provision is sometimes portrayed as a threat to welfare state universalism in Nordic societies. In Finland, CSOs co-produce integration services alongside comprehensive official integration programmes, compensating for gaps and shortcomings in those services. We identify three “gaps”, which are (1) limited availability of services in terms of time and target group, (2) lack of direct labour market contacts and (3) limited flexibility to serve individual needs. We assess how CSOs target these gaps with their service offerings through qualitative interviews with policy implementers, CSO workers and migrants. How…

Philosophical and Youth-Studies Perspectives on the Participation Imperative
2020
In this article we analyse the concept of participation. The analysis is informed by both quantitative and qualitative youth studies conducted in Finland. To analyse different aspects of participation special emphasis is placed on the migrant young seeking asylum. Young can be seen as sometimes engaged and disengaged from the existing forms of participating. The results of the youth studies also show that there seems to be a gap between representative democracy and the peer-group-based forms of participation of the young. To analyse in detail how this gap can be understood, the theory of recognition developed by Axel Honneth is used to pinpoint different arenas of participation. Honneth’s l…
Conclusion: Reconsidering State and Politics in Religious Peacebuilding
2016
In the concluding chapter, Steen-Johnsen suggests that the conceptual framework of Brewer et al. on religion and peacemaking goes a long way in explaining how state–religious relations can mediate opportunities to build peace. She underlines, however, that including how the political strategies of state authorities regarding the civil sphere and the enactment of these strategies in state–religious relations affect religious peacebuilding strengthens the analytical capacity of Brewer et al.’s framework. She underlines that in order to understand the full complexity of how the political strategies of state authorities impact on religious peacebuilding, we need to study these state–religious i…
