The “corporealization” of the nation: notions of the unclean and viscosity in the nationalist discourse of Spanish fascism
2017
ABSTRACTThe present article focuses on the particular case of the nationalist discourse of Spanish fascism during the Spanish Civil War and the immediate postwar period (1936–1941), in order to explore one specific aspect of it: the characterization of the enemy Republican nation that was to be fought against as unclean and viscous or sticky. The aim here is to analyse what meanings these references possessed and what they can tell us about the general processes of construction of discourses of identity. For this purpose, use is made of certain propositions developed by sociology and anthropology, as a basis upon which to develop the hypothesis that the use of the aforementioned references …
Fascism and empire: Fascist Italy against republican Spain
1998
From 1931 onward, Fascist Italy tried to influence Spanish politics through a combination of formal diplomatic action and clandestine support for monarchist conspirators. Spain did not, however, become an axis of Italy's foreign affairs until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Supporting Franco was a way of helping to destroy international Communism and the democratic challenge and also served Mussolini's claims to Italian hegemony in the Mediterranean. From the point of view of domestic politics, helping Fascism in Spain would help to maintain the mobilization of the Italian people. In Italy's participation in the Spanish Civil War imperial Fascism, defined as foreign aggression, ideol…
Spanish Fascist Women’s Transnational Relations during the Second World War: Between Ideology and Realpolitik
2018
Spanish fascist women played a very active role in the Falange’s cross-border relations with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. From the very beginning, fascist women took a preeminent place in these contacts and exchanges in order to see with their own eyes how both fascist models were at a practical level. These relationships between fascist women’s organizations were born out of deep ideological affinity and were especially fluid, firstly on a bilateral level and after 1940 on the ‘New Order’ Europe-wide multilateral, transnational collaboration. However, they lacked neither of political calculation nor could abstract from the wider fra…

Spanish History in The Fairy Country: Dealing with Social Trauma in 'Pan's Labyrinth'
2014
2017
There are two interpretations of Peter the Great’s motives for refusing to land on the Swedish island of Schonen in historiography: that the tsar feared unforeseen military risks and that he did not trust his allies, Denmark and Great Britain. In this article, the author attempts to analyse in a more detailed way the reasons and consequences for the mistrust in the Northern Alliance by looking at communications by Baron Friedrich Ernst von Cnyphausen, the Prussian ambassador in Copenhagen. It is shown that the Russophobic hysteria which grasped the Danish royal court in September 1716 looks completely irrational when we consider parallel attitudes in the Prussian court. Cnyphausen does not …
2019
During the Spanish Civil War and postwar period, tens of thousands of supporters of the Second Republic were shot and thrown into common graves, whereas their friends and relatives were not allowed to pay them tribute or carry out a proper burial. After Franco’s death, and despite the killings having happened a long time ago, the desire to dig up those relatives’ remains, perform a proper funeral service, and bury them in a cemetery had not changed. It could even be said that the chances opened up once democracy was reestablished heightened such wish. In many towns and villages republican’s relatives managed to find out where the illegal graves were, to hold massively attended funeral servi…
