Antibacterial PEGylated Solid Lipid Microparticles for Cosmeceutical Purpose: Formulation, Characterization, and Efficacy Evaluation

2020

The development of efficacious means of delivering antioxidant polyphenols from natural sources for the treatment of skin diseases is of great interest for many cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. Resveratrol (RSV) and Limonene (LIM) have been shown to possess good anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus infections responsible for many skin disorders, such as acne vulgaris. In this study, solid lipid microparticles are designed as composite vehicles capable of encapsulating a high amount of trans-RSV and enhancing its absorption through the stratum corneum. A microparticulate system based on mixture of PEGylate lipids, long-chain alcohols and LIM is a…

Prophylaxis of Non-communicable Diseases: Why fruits and vegetables may be better chemopreventive agents than dietary supplements based on isolated p…

2019

The World Health Organization (WHO) report from 2014 documented that non-communicable socalled civilization diseases such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer or type 2 diabetes are responsible for over 50% of all premature deaths in the world. Research carried out over the past 20 years has provided data suggesting that diet is an essential factor influencing the risk of development of these diseases. The increasing knowledge on chemopreventive properties of certain food ingredients, in particular, those of plant origin, opened the discussion on the possibility to use edible plants or their active components in the prevention of these chronic diseases. Health-pro…

Programmi di clemenza e azione risarcitoria: convivenza possibile?

2014

This work stems from the European Directive on antitrust damages actions and enquires on the need to preserve the effectiveness of antitrust public and private enforcement within the framework of the relationship between the leniency programmes and actions for damages. As is well known, the leniency programmes allow companies involved in an agreement prohibited by competition law to cooperate with competent Antitrust Authority in order to disclose such an infringement and obtain the immunity or a reduction from fines. This generates the need to preserve the secrecy of leniency statements in order to not deter companies from using such a programme. The Directive provides, inter alia, that na…

SUCCESSO E DECLINO DELLA SCUOLA GENOVESIANA IN SICILIA SUL FINIRE DEL XVIII E IL PRINCIPIO DEL XIX SECOLO

2021

In the Sicily of late 18th century, during the harshest contraposition between viceroyal government and parliamentary baronage, the Genovesian school gains a great success on the island among scholars and academicians as well as ruling class. In this particular moment of Sicilian history, the theme of reforms is at the top of the political agenda and the thought of Genovesi and his scholars spurs projects to reform the old institutions of the Kingdom, to modernize agriculture, raise productivity and introduce a fairer taxation. The reputation of the Neapolitan school is so well-known that all the parties are inspired by Its economic and political proposals. Furthermore, the Crown and the ba…

On the severity of aortic stenosis in ascending aortic aneurysm: A computational tool to examine ventricular-arterial interaction and aortic wall str…

2020

Abstract An ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) is a life-threatening cardiovascular consequence of vessel dilatation that portends adverse events and death. From a clinical perspective, ATAA should not be treated as an isolated disease, and surgery is often carried out in the presence of AS, aortic insufficiency or a calcified valve leaflet. Aortic stenosis (AS) is common in ATAAs and leads to both vessel rigidity and left ventricular (LV) impairment. In this study, lumped-parameter modeling and computational analysis were used to assess the change in the wall shear stress (WSS) and intramural wall stress of patient-specific ATAA models with different degrees of AS (i.e., mild to sev…

Life Cycle Assessment of an Ambitious Renovation of a Norwegian Apartment Building to nZEB Standard

2018

Author's accepted manuscript. The upgrading of building infrastructure to modern standards represents a key tool for reducing global energy demand and emissions from buildings. In Norway, building upgrades have been prioritized despite the relatively low carbon intensity of the Norwegian energy mix through various incentive programs and continual improvement in building standards. Prioritizing upgrades is important as up to 90% of the existing Norwegian building stock is expected to remain standing by the year 2050. The overall impact of upgrading buildings is expected to be a net benefit to the environment but this is primarily in operation, and many studies on energy do not include the ma…

A matter of style? testing the moderating effect of driving styles on the relationship between job strain and work-related crashes of professional dr…

2020

Abstract Different empirical studies suggest that both job strain and driving styles are significant contributors to the work-related traffic crashes suffered by professional drivers. Nevertheless, the current evidence falls considerably short when explaining why driving styles may modify (or not) the relationship between occupational stressors and professional drivers’ safety outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine whether driving styles moderate the effect of job strain on professional drivers’ Work Traffic Crashes (WTCs). This research was performed using the data collected from a sample of 753 professional drivers, responding to a self-report questionnaire on job strain (work str…

Impulsive Tests on Historical Structures: The Dome of Teatro Massimo in Palermo

2016

Cultural heritage is the set of things, that having particular historical cultural and aesthetic are of public interest and constitute the wealth and civilization of a place and its people. Sharpen up methodologies aimed at safeguarding of monuments is crucial because the future may have in mind the historical past. Italy is a country that has invested heavily on its historical memory returned in large part by the historical building or the monuments. Furthermore, culture represents a fundamental indicator of the growth of the culture of a country. Consider a monitoring project of one of the most Impressive theater in the world, like “Teatro Massimo” in Palermo (Italy), means to add value t…

Functional Fibronectin Adsorption on Aptamer-Doped Chitosan Modulates Cell Morphology by Integrin-Mediated Pathway.

2019

A decisive step in cell-biomaterial interaction is represented by the adsorption of proteins at the interface, whose fine control may be useful to trigger proper cell response. To this purpose, we can selectively control protein adsorption on biomaterials by means of aptamers. Aptamers selected to recognize fibronectin dramatically enhance chitosan ability to promote cell proliferation and adhesion, but the underlying biological mechanism remains unknown. We supposed that aptamers contributed to ameliorate the adsorption of fibronectin in an advantageous geometrical conformation for cells, thus regulating their morphology by the proper activation of the integrin-mediated pathway. We investi…
