Hepatitis C: The beginning of the end-key elements for successful European and national strategies to eliminate HCV in Europe
2018
Abstract: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health problem in the European Union (EU). An estimated 5.6 million Europeans are chronically infected with a wide range of variation in prevalence across European Union countries. Although HCV continues to spread as a largely silent pandemic, its elimination is made possible through the availability of the new antiviral drugs and the implementation of prevention practices. On 17 February 2016, the Hepatitis B & C Public Policy Association held the first EU HCV Policy Summit in Brussels. This summit was an historic event as it was the first high-level conference focusing on the elimination of HCV at the European Union level. The …
Head–Neck Cancer Delineation
2021
Head–Neck Cancer (HNC) has a relevant impact on the oncology patient population and for this reason, the present review is dedicated to this type of neoplastic disease. In particular, a collection of methods aimed at tumor delineation is presented, because this is a fundamental task to perform efficient radiotherapy. Such a segmentation task is often performed on uni-modal data (usually Positron Emission Tomography (PET)) even though multi-modal images are preferred (PET-Computerized Tomography (CT)/PET-Magnetic Resonance (MR)). Datasets can be private or freely provided by online repositories on the web. The adopted techniques can belong to the well-known image processing/computer-vision a…

Medical news from scientific analysis of the Turin Shroud
2015
This paper synthetizes a series of works recently published in reference to medical studies regarding both the physical conditions of the Man who was wrapped in the Turin Shroud (TS) and the tortures to which this Man was subjected. An event that influenced the rapid course of the Passion and the cause of death of the TS Man was the fall under the weight of the cross. This Man shows, on the right side, shoulder lowering, flat hand and henophthalmos, revealing a violent blunt trauma, from behind, to neck, chest and shoulder, with the entire brachial plexus injury and muscular damage to the neck bottom with the head bent forward and turned to the left, on the cross, as he had a stiff neck. Mo…
Legal aspects of forensic DNA analysis in Germany
1997
DNA analysis may be carried out in cases of civil law (e.g., in cases of disputed paternity) as well as of criminal law (e.g., a case of murder). This overview will concentrate on DNA analysis in the context of criminal law. DNA typing of forensic stain samples is generally carried out in laboratories of the Police and of University Institutes of Legal Medicine. The police laboratories are usually part of the State Criminal Offices (Landeskriminalamt, LKA) or of the central Federal Criminal Office (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA). Each of the sixteen German Federal States (except one) has a LKA with a department carrying out forensic stain analyses. The 25 Institutes of Legal Medicine belong to the…
