2017
It may seem somewhat odd to study the way by which the defeat of Aigos-Potamoi is described in a discourse which is an utter praise of the excellence of Athens as is the Panathenaic Oration of Aelius Aristides. Nevertheless, the account of this event (§ 252-263) is significant. Thanks to two successive rhetorical stratagems (move to the Thirty episode and comparison with Marathon), the battle of Aigos-Potamoi is concealed as a defeat and changed into victory. Besides, this defeat is both anticipated and extended through the oration. Upstream, it makes clear a special feature in the discourse’s organisation (the reason why Aristides chooses a comparative point of view, which suddenly breaks …

2013
International audience; One of the most interesting figures of Roman history with respect to the construction of historical memory is L. Licinius Lucullus. Although remarkable for his military success and appreciated for his generosity towards the inhabitants of the provinces subject to the Romans, which dedicated to him some inscriptions that are monumenta in his memory, his tendency to excess and extravagance was significantly recorded in certain literary sources producing a distinctly chiaroscuro portrait. The evaluation of his conduct seems contradictory already in Cicero who tends to denigrate Lucullus in some harangues for his rapacity but later praises his military success when conve…

L’épistémologie de Jean Bollack ou Bollack contre Bollack
2015
International audience; Jean Bollack’s philologische Wissenschaft aims to reach the “good lesson” of a text and to get the “original intent” of its author, in the true sense of these expressions. It is based on three main elements: the identification of biases that would lead to an incorrect interpretation; the syntactic analysis of the text and the discussion of the points of view of other scholars (i.e. a dialectical criticism). Bollack – despite his accuracy – does not question his own assumptions: 1) that the sense of a text is in the manuscripts we possess (or – in any case – it is recoverable through them); 2) the idea that the great texts are more insightful than others; and 3) the n…
2019
Ettore Gabrici, who first excavated the structure located in the northwest corner of Solunto’s agora in 1920-21, identified the remains as part of a thermal bath, despite missing some of the key elements which usually characterize this type of buildings (hypocaust, praefurnium, heating pipes). After the re-examination of the architectural elements, this paper suggests a different interpretation which takes into account archaeological evidences from the broader Mediterranean context (especially from Sicily and the Punic world). The results here presented could actively contribute to a better understanding of the hydraulic engineering in Sicily during the Hellenistic Period. As a matter of fa…
