Aqua Mater: On the Meaning of the Theonym Betatun

2021

The finding of an inscription containing the Iberian theonym Betatun in the surrounding area of the Late Iberian sanctuary in Las Atalayuelas site (Fuerte del Rey – Torredelcampo, Jaén) opens up new perspectives for the st…

How We Forgot Who Discovered DNA: Why It Matters How You Communicate Your Results

2019

One hundred and fifty years ago, a hopeful young researcher reported a recent discovery he had made. Working in the bowels of a medieval castle in the German city of Tübingen, he had isolated a then entirely new type of molecule. This was the birth of a field that would fundamentally change the course of biology, medicine, and beyond. His discovery: DNA. His name: Friedrich Miescher. In this article, the authors try to find answers to the question why-despite the fact that virtually everyone nowadays knows DNA-hardly anyone remembers the man who discovered it. In the history of science, the discovery of DNA was a seminal moment. Why then did it not enter into public memory? Ground-breaking …

Contributions to the history of psychology: CXIX. The Spanish Neurohistological School's legacy: Cajal and Lorente de Nó.

2003

Santiago Ramón y Cajal made his mark in the history of science as a brilliant researcher of the histology of the nervous system. His bold efforts and the international recognition he received during his lifetime played an important role in the consolidation of the Spanish Neurohistological School which is composed of a large number of eminent disciples. Amongst these, and of outstanding repute, is Rafael Lorente de Nó whose research had a significant influence on the work of Canadian psychologist Donald O. Hebb and, consequently, on the development of neurophysiological theory. This paper analyses some of the contributions of Cajal and his disciple Lorente de Nó which formed the anatomical…

La géographie humaine d’Hydace

2020

Hydatius’ Chronicle allows us to set a human geography map focused on the periphery of 5th century Roman Empire. Despite the pretention to be universal, it shows a world shrunk to Iberian territories as parts of the greater Christian space. Ciuitas and urbs seem to be interchangeable, but some evidence indicate that the first word is more significant.

Herodotus’ awareness of the Peloponnesian War

2020

AbstractThis article aims to discuss the relationship between Herodotus and Thucydides. New scholarly trends date the composition of Herodotus’Historiesto 413 BC, or even later, against high chronology of 431, and suggest Herodotus’ use of Thucydides’ narrative. Herodotus’ debt to Thucydides has been suggested by scholars either cautiously or boldly. This examination will show cases where Herodotus is alluding to events of the Peloponnesian War or even responding to Thucydides’ narrative. In fact, anachronisms, presentisms, and allusions to Thucydides’ text can be found throughout Herodotus’ narrative. We will explore the reasons for Herodotus’ engaging with the events of that War, conjectu…

Kildare rebellion (1534-1535) in the Annals of the Four Masters

2020

Abstract One of the most important Irish historical sources, which are the Annals of the Four Masters, written in the modern period, provide us with unusually valuable information about the history of the Emerald Island. In addition to data from the ancient or medieval periods, it also contains material from the difficult 16th and 17th centuries for Ireland, when it came under the yoke of English Protestants, who were initially represented by the Tudors and then by the Stuart dynasty. The Annals of the Four Masters also witnesses the resistance of the Irish, both those from Hiberno Normans and Gaelic Irish, to the demands of new authorities, including the rejection of Catholicism and total …
