Impact of Holocene climate variability on lacustrine records and human settlements in South Greenland

2015

Due to its sensitivity to climate changes, south Greenland is a particularly suitable area to study past global climate changes and their influence on locale Human settlements. A paleohydrological investigation was therefore carried out on two river-fed lakes: Lake Qallimiut and Little Kangerluluup, both located close to the Labrador Sea in the historic farming center of Greenland. Two sediment cores (QAL-2011 and LKG-2011), spanning the last four millennia, were retrieved and showed similar thin laminae, described by high magnetic susceptibility and density, high titanium and TOC / TN atomic ratio, and coarse grain size. They are also characterized either by inverse grading followed by nor…

Precipitation and Temperature

2016

Climatological studies indicate that climate change lead to an increase in the mean global temperature of around 0.5 °C until the end of the twentieth century. This warming impacts the atmospheric humidity, wind, radiation, and precipitation. However, the magnitude of changes is not equally distributed over the globe but differs markedly with regions, making a regionalization of the global information essential. The GLOWA-Danube project follows such a downscaling approach with the focus on the drainage basin of the Upper Danube River.

Are wide but selectively logged buffer strips better than narrow ones?

2020

The microclimate of streamside habitats are protected from the effects of logging with buffer strips of retained trees. However, these buffer strips are often narrow due to their financial loss. Wi...

Impact of climate, soil properties and grassland cover on soil water repellency

2021

Abstract Numerous soil water repellency (SWR) studies have investigated the possible causes of this temporal phenomenon, yet there remains a lack of knowledge on the order of importance of the main driving forces of SWR in the context of changing environmental conditions under grassland ecosystems. To study the separate and combined effects of soil texture, climate, and grassland cover type on inducing or altering SWR, four sites from different climatic and soil regions were selected: Ciavolo (CI, IT), Csolyospalos (CSP, HU), Pwllpeiran (PW, UK), Sekule (SE, SK). The investigated parameters were the extent (determined by repellency indices RI, RIc and RIm) and persistence (determined by wat…

Tunable diode laser measurements of hydrothermal/volcanic CO2 and implications for the global CO<sub&am…

2014

Abstract. Quantifying the CO2 flux sustained by low-temperature fumarolic fields in hydrothermal/volcanic environments has remained a challenge, to date. Here, we explored the potential of a commercial infrared tunable laser unit for quantifying such fumarolic volcanic/hydrothermal CO2 fluxes. Our field tests were conducted between April 2013 and March 2014 at Nea Kameni (Santorini, Greece), Hekla and Krýsuvík (Iceland) and Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy). At these sites, the tunable laser was used to measure the path-integrated CO2 mixing ratios along cross sections of the fumaroles' atmospheric plumes. By using a tomographic post-processing routine, we then obtained, for each manifestati…

Minor and trace elements in olivines as probes into early igneous and mantle melting processes

2013

Abstract The trace element composition of olivine is a rapidly growing research area that has several applications of great potential. Mantle olivines can be distinguished from volcanic olivines by lower concentrations of Ca (

Changes in vegetation spring dates in the second half of the twentieth century

2011

This study aims at estimating trends in spring phenology from vegetation index and air temperature at 2 m height. To this end, we have developed a methodology to infer spring phenological dates from Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies GIMMS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index NDVI time-series, which are then extrapolated to the period 1948–2006 with the help of Reanalysis data, using its 2 m height air temperature parameter. First, yearly NDVI is fitted to a double-logistic function for the whole extent of the GIMMS database 1981–2003. This fitting procedure allows us to describe, on a yearly basis, the NDVI evolution for each pixel through the estimation of six parameters whic…

Palaeogeographical relationships between Alpine and Jura glaciers during the two last Pleistocene glaciations

1992

Abstract Two main moraine complexes are usually defined in the northwestern Alpine piedmont: the External Moraine Complex (EMC) dated to the penultimate glaciation (“Riss” sensu lato) and the Internal Moraine Complex (IMC) dated to the last glaciation (“Wurm”). Until recently the prevalent concept was that these two complexes had been built by glaciers originating in the central Alpine zone. This paper presents a new palaeogeographical diagram, based on mapping and petrographical studies of these two moraine complexes, and especially on the relationships between Alpine and Jura tills. We reach the following conclusions. 1. (1) The Jura glaciers were independent of the Alpine glaciers during…

Ash resuspension related to the 2011–2012 Cordón Caulle eruption, Chile, in a rural community of Patagonia, Argentina

2017

Abstract The 2011–2012 Cordon Caulle eruption emitted about 1 km3 of rhyodacitic tephra. Dominant westerly winds in the region caused most of the primary tephra to deposit in neighboring Argentina. In addition to the impact of widespread dispersal and fallout of primary tephra during the eruption, Argentina was also significantly affected by remobilization of the primary ash even several years after the climactic phase of the eruption. In this mixed methods study, we combine aspects of natural and social sciences to characterize the ash resuspension events associated with the 2011–2012 Cordon Caulle deposits and assess the impacts on the Argentinian farming community of Ingeniero Jacobacci …

Control of Seasonality and Interannual to Centennial Climate Variability in the Caribbean During the Holocene—Combining Coral Records, Stalagmite Rec…

2014

This study aimed at quantifying the amplitudes of seasonality and interannual to centennial climate variability in the Caribbean region throughout the Holocene, by using marine (shallow-water corals) and terrestrial (speleothems) climate archives, and climate model simulations (COSMOS). Sea-surface temperature (SST) variability on interdecadal to multidecadal timescales was more pronounced during the mid-Holocene compared to the late Holocene. The amplitude of the SST annual cycle was within the present-day range throughout most of the last 6,000 years. Exceptions include slightly increased SST seasonality at 6,200 years ago, which can be attributed mainly to insolation forcing on orbital t…
