Odontogenic Infections: A 1-year Retrospective Study.
2015
ABSTRACT Objectives The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence, demographic patterns and management of odontogenic infections in patients undergoing treatment in an outpatient dental emergency service of a university hospital. Materials and methods In a retrospective study of the year 2012, all patients suffering from odontogenic infections were included. Demographic data, diagnosis and the conducted treatment were analyzed. Odontogenic infections were defined as pulpitis, apical and marginal periodontitis, abscesses and pericoronitis. Results A total of 2,058 out of 4,209 emergency patients suffered from odontogenic infections. The majority (45.0%) had an apical periodontitis,…
Interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C
1996
The efficacy of short-course (three months), low-dose (3 million units three times a week) interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C was evaluated in a meta-analysis of controlled trials. Nine studies (five randomized and four nonrandomized) found by MEDLINE search were eligible for analysis. The outcomes assessed were the rate of patients with normal serum aminotransferases (all trials) and without HCV RNA in blood (five trials) after posttreatment follow-up. Eight trials compared interferon to no treatment, and one compared different schedules of interferon. The methodological quality of the studies was high. However, all trials had been planned for a short-term evaluation based on bi…
Whole-body MRI in patients with lymphoma: collateral findings.
2016
To assess the incidence of collateral findings detected on whole-body magnetic resonance (WB-MRI) scans performed on patients with lymphoma. 114 patients (65 male; median age 45.2 years, range 15–86) with histologically confirmed lymphoma (47 Hodgkin, 67 Non-Hodgkin) underwent WB-MRI. The collateral findings were classified into three classes, according to their clinical significance, as follows: not or low significant (class 1), moderately or potentially significant (class 2), and significant (class 3). A Chi-square (χ 2) test was performed to assess the statistical significance of differences in the incidence of collateral findings based on age (≤50 and >50 years old), gender and histolog…
Serum thyroid hormones, thyrotropin and thyroxine binding globulin during prolonged strength training.
1988
The effects of progressive strength training for 24 weeks on maximal strength and pituitary-thyroid function were studied in 21 males during the training and during the following detraining period of 12 weeks. Maximal strength increased greatly (p less than 0.001) in the first 20 weeks, followed by a plateau phase in the last 4 weeks of training. Maximal strength decreased greatly (p less than 0.001) during the detraining period. The concentrations of serum total (T4) and free thyroxine (fT4) decreased (p less than 0.05 and less than 0.01, respectively) during the training period and they rose to pretraining levels during the detraining period. During the most intense training phase (the la…
Histopathology of ameloblastoma of the jaws; some critical observations based on a 40 years single institution experience
2011
The aim of the present study is to examine all cases of intraosseous benign ameloblastomas treated between 1970 and 2010 in a single institution and to look for a possible correlation between the histopathological aspects and the demographical and clinical parameters, as well as the treatment outcome. The data of a total number of 44 patients were retrieved from the records. Nine patients were excluded because of doubt about the correct diagnosis (8 patients) or because of an extra-osseous presentation (1 patient). No statistically significant differences were found between the histopathological (sub)types of ameloblastomas and the demographical and clinical parameters, nor between the hist…
Pharmaceutical validation as a process of improving the quality of antineoplastic treatment
2006
Objective. To quantify the improvement added by standardization of pharmaceutical validation (PV) of antineoplastic treatment to the processes of prescription and preparation of the pharmacotherapeutic sequence, in terms of prevention and reduction of medication errors (ME). Design. Prospective cohort study during two years (from 2001-2002) for oncohaematologic patients (inpatients and outpatients) that compared the percentage of medication errors detected and resolved and the number of medication errors with potential clinical significance (severity value ≥4) intercepted during PV in both years. Results. During the PV processes, 202 ME were identified and resolved, which is the equivalent…
Statin therapy and plasma coenzyme Q10 concentrations—A systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials
2015
Statin therapy may lower plasma coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) concentrations, but the evidence as to the significance of this effect is unclear. We assessed the impact of statin therapy on plasma CoQ10 concentrations through the meta-analysis of available RCTs. The literature search included selected databases up to April 30, 2015. The meta-analysis was performed using either a fixed-effects or random-effect model according to I(2) statistic. Effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The data from 8 placebo-controlled treatment arms suggested a significant reduction in plasma CoQ10 concentrations following treatment with statins (WMD: -0.44 μmol/…
Effect of continuous oestradiol-medroxyprogesterone administration on plasma lipids and lipoproteins
1991
Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 21 post-menopausal women after 4 and 8 months of continuous treatment with an orally administered combination of oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate. The mean concentrations of cholesterol and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were reduced by 12% (P less than 0.001) and 11% (P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 months of treatment and by 9% (P less than 0.05) and 12% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months. The mean level of high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol showed an initial fall of 5% (P less than 0.05) after 4 months and then increased by 13% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months of treatment. The plasma triglycerides leve…
Clinical significance of increased intraabdominal pressure in severe acute pancreatitis.
2002
The aim of the study was to assess whether increased intra-abdominal pressure affects the clinical course and reflects on the effectiveness of the conservative treatment in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. Data on 37 consecutive patients with severe acute pancreatitis that were collected prospectively included APACHE II score, daily measurement of the intra-abdominal pressure, and clinical routine. Group A consisted of 26 patients with intra-abdominal pressure < 25 cm/H 2 O during their treatment period, and group B consisted of 11 patients with intraabdominal pressure ≥ 25 cm/H 2 O. SIRS, MODS, complication rate and mortality were analysed. The age, APACHE II scores and hospital st…
Peripheral arterial disease and its clinical significance in nonagenarians
2008
The purpose of this study was to characterize the prevalence and clinical features of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) among 90-year-old individuals and to assess its relationship to lower extremity functional status and survival over one year.A prospective, population- based study of all 90-year-old residents of Jyväskylä, Finland. Fifty-eight out of the 79 registered residents were examined for ankle-brachial index (ABI). Lower extremity functional status was assessed as self-reported difficulty in performing specific physical activities of daily living (PADL). In a subgroup of 36 individuals, lower extremity functioning was further assessed by measuring walking endurance and walking vel…
