Comprehensive transcriptional analysis of the oxidative response in yeast

2008

The oxidative stress response in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been analyzed by parallel determination of mRNA levels and transcription rates for the entire genome. A mathematical algorithm has been adapted for a dynamic situation such as the response to stress, to calculate theoretical mRNA decay rates from the experimental data. Yeast genes have been grouped into 25 clusters according to mRNA level and transcription rate kinetics, and average mRNA decay rates have been calculated for each cluster. In most of the genes, changes in one or both experimentally determined parameters occur during the stress response. 24% of the genes are transcriptionally induced without an increase inmRNAlevels…

piRNAclusterDB 2.0: update and expansion of the piRNA cluster database.

2021

Abstract PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) and their partnering PIWI proteins defend the animal germline against transposable elements and play a crucial role in fertility. Numerous studies in the past have uncovered many additional functions of the piRNA pathway, including gene regulation, anti-viral defense, and somatic transposon repression. Further, comparative analyses across phylogenetic groups showed that the PIWI/piRNA system evolves rapidly and exhibits great evolutionary plasticity. However, the presence of so-called piRNA clusters as the major source of piRNAs is common to nearly all metazoan species. These genomic piRNA-producing loci are highly divergent across taxa and critically…

Short Term Dynamics of Tourist Arrivals: What Do Italian Destinations Have in Common?

2011

This work aims to detect the common short term dynamics to yearly time series of 413 Italian tourist areas. We adopt the clustering technique of Abraham et al. (Scand J Stat. 30:581–595, 2003) who propose a two-stage method which fits the data by B-splines and partitions the estimated model coefficients using a k-means algorithm. The description of each cluster, which identifies a specific kind of dynamics, is made through simple descriptive cross tabulations in order to study how the location of the areas across the regions or their prevailing typology of tourism characterize each group.

Clustering cities through urban metrics analysis

2017

[EN] This paper describes a process for measuring and characterizing urban morphological zones. These urban zones are delineated for the entire area of Spain, independently of administrative boundaries and excluding demographic data, using a high resolution land-use dataset. Given the rich information available on land cover and subsequently assigned population data, it is possible to calculate a set of urban spatial metrics to classify these urban zones into homogenous morphological groups. Four types of urban agglomerations are identified in Spain by working with these urban metrics and applying a final cluster analysis. Although these groups have a general complex monocentric typology, e…

Universal Design for Learning come cornice per l’insegnamento inclusivo.

An accurate and efficient collaborative intrusion detection framework to secure vehicular networks

2015

Display Omitted We design and implement an accurate and lightweight intrusion detection framework, called AECFV.AECFV aims to protect the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) against the most dangerous attacks that could occurred on this network.AECFV take into account the VANET's characteristics such as high node's mobility and rapid topology change.AECFV exhibits a high detection rate, low false positive rate, faster attack detection, and lower communication overhead. The advancement of wireless communication leads researchers to develop and conceive the idea of vehicular networks, also known as vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Security in such network is mandatory due to a vital informa…

Efficient Dense Disparity Map Reconstruction using Sparse Measurements

2018

International audience; In this paper, we propose a new stereo matching algorithm able to reconstruct efficiently a dense disparity maps from few sparse disparity measurements. The algorithm is initialized by sampling the reference image using the Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) superpixel method. Then, a sparse disparity map is generated only for the obtained boundary pixels. The reconstruction of the entire disparity map is obtained through the scanline propagation method. Outliers were effectively removed using an adaptive vertical median filter. Experimental results were conducted on the standard and the new Middlebury datasets show that the proposed method produces high-quali…

Characterisation of fascioliasis lymnaeid intermediate hosts from Chile by DNA sequencing, with emphasis on Lymnaea viator and Galba truncatula.

2011

In South America, Fasciola hepatica infection poses serious health problems in both humans and livestock. In Chile, the medical impact appears yearly stable and mainly concentrated in central regions, where the veterinary problem is highlighted by higher animal prevalences. Studies were undertaken by rDNA ITS-2 and ITS-1 and mtDNA cox1 sequencing to clarify the specific status of the lymnaeids, their geographical distribution and fascioliasis transmission capacity in Chile, by comparison with other American countries and continents. Results change the lymnaeid scenario known so far. The lymnaeid fauna of mainland Chile shows to be poor, including only two authochthonous species, Lymnaea via…

Short communication: casein haplotype variability in sicilian dairy goat breeds.

2008

In the Mediterranean region, goat milk production is an important economic activity. In the present study, 4 casein genes were genotyped in 5 Sicilian goat breeds to 1) identify casein haplotypes present in the Argentata dell'Etna, Girgentana, Messinese, Derivata di Siria, and Maltese goat breeds; and 2) describe the structure of the Sicilian goat breeds based on casein haplotypes and allele frequencies. In a sample of 540 dairy goats, 67 different haplotypes with frequency >or=0.01 and 27 with frequency >or=0.03 were observed. The most common CSN1S1-CSN2-CSN1S2-CSN3 haplotype for Derivata di Siria and Maltese was FCFB (0.17 and 0.22, respectively), whereas for Argentata dell'Etna, Girgenta…

Applying pattern recognition methods plus quantum and physico-chemical molecular descriptors to analyze the anabolic activity of structurally diverse…

2008

The great cost associated with the development of new anabolic-androgenic steroid (AASs) makes necessary the development of computational methods that shorten the drug discovery pipeline. Toward this end, quantum, and physicochemical molecular descriptors, plus linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were used to analyze the anabolic/androgenic activity of structurally diverse steroids and to discover novel AASs, as well as also to give a structural interpretation of their anabolic-androgenic ratio (AAR). The obtained models are able to correctly classify 91.67% (86.27%) of the AASs in the training (test) sets, respectively. The results of predictions on the 10% full-out cross-validation test al…
