Questing abundance of adult taiga ticks Ixodes persulcatus and their Borrelia prevalence at the north-western part of their distribution

2020

Background Because ixodid ticks are vectors of zoonotic pathogens, including Borrelia, information of their abundance, seasonal variation in questing behaviour and pathogen prevalence is important for human health. As ticks are invading new areas northwards, information from these new areas are needed. Taiga tick (Ixodes persulcatus) populations have been recently found at Bothnian Bay, Finland. We assessed seasonal variation in questing abundance of ticks and their pathogen prevalence in coastal deciduous forests near the city of Oulu (latitudes 64–65°) in 2019. Methods We sampled ticks from May until September by cloth dragging 100 meters once a month at eight study sites. We calculated a…

Izmaiņas Latvijas piekrastes ainavā 20.-21. gadsimta mijā un mūsdienu izaicinājumi

2013

Dažādi faktori ietekmē piekrastes zonas attīstību gan pasaulē, gan Latvijā, kā rezultātā notiek izmaiņas ainavas struktūrā un tās spējā nodrošināt sabiedrībai nepieciešamos resursus. Promocijas darbā Latvijas piekrastes ainava ir pētīta atšķirīgos mērogos un kontekstos: i) izmaiņas jūras piekrastes ainavas struktūrā un tās ietekmējošie faktori ir vērtēti visas Latvijas piekrastes zonā; ii) potenciālā vēja enerģijas ražošanas jūrā ietekme uz ainavas vizuālo struktūru ir novērtēta unikālajā Baltijas jūras stāvkrastu zonā; iii) pludmales ainavas kā rekreācijas pakalpojuma nodrošinātāja nozīmīgums ir noskaidrots četrās atšķirīgās Latvijas pludmalēs.

Investigations into the development and role of a Mediterranean intertidal bioconstruction for coastal conservation: the Vermetid Reef

2017

Vermetid reefs are intertidal biogenic habitats created by a dense aggregation of mollusks, frequently cemented by calcareous algae, and are typical of sub-tropical and warm–temperate rocky shores. These bioconstructions are valuable key-habitats of the coastal zones, increasing their productivity and biological value. In the Mediterranean, the main vermetid reef builders belong to the genus Dendropoma and are associated to encrusting coralline red algae. These organisms are ecosystem engineers protected under international European Legislation, although vermetid reef conservation is limited by a lack of biological and ecological knowledge. The two-way interactions between biota and the phy…

Potential effects of transgenic cotton on soil ecosystem processes in Vietnam.

2008

This chapter concentrates on the potential effects of transgenic cotton on the soil ecosystem of three major cotton growing areas in Vietnam: the coastal lowlands region, the central highlands (eastern and western Truong Son Mountain Range) and the south-eastern region. Soils in these three regions are very different, so it will be necessary to assess the effects of transgenic cotton on typical soils from all three regions. The soils in the south-eastern region are Luvisols, Andosols and Acrisols. In the central highlands, the soils are mainly Luvisols, Rhodic Ferrasols and Haplic Acrisols. The soils in the coastal lowlands region are mainly delta soils, consolidated occasionally by grey li…

Sisubiotus hakaiensis sp. nov. (Tardigrada, Macrobiotidae), a new tardigrade species from Calvert Island (British Columbia, Canada)

2022

Tardigrades reports from British Columbia (Canada) trace back to 1908 and numerous species have been recorded from this region, despite the relatively few published sampling studies. We describe by integrative taxonomy (light microscopy morphology, morphometrics, and DNA sequencing) a new tardigrade species, Sisubiotus hakaiensis sp. nov. from the British Columbia central coast. The new species has been found in moss collected from a vertical rock outcrop near the Hakai Institute Calvert Island Field Station. Sisubiotus hakaiensis sp. nov. differs from all the other known species in the genus by the presence of a labyrinthine layer inside the egg process walls, whereas no consistent differe…

Re-postcards - Palermo. Re-thinking the urban seaside

2017

The postcard is an extract of the Palermo Research Unit’s contribution to the “Re-cycle Italy” National Interest Research Project at the international seminar “Recycling and Infrastructure Plan for the Territory. Selection, Maintenance, and New Models”, organized by the Politecnico di Milano Research Unit on the 26th and 27th February 2015.
