Proteins and polypeptides are characterized by low-frequency vibrations in the terahertz regime responsible for the so-called "boson peak". The shape and position of this peak are related to the mechanical properties of peptide chains. Amyloid fibrils are ordered macromolecular assemblies, spontaneously formed in nature, characterized by unique biological and nanomechanical properties. Secondary nucleation and accessible surface in insulin amyloid fibril formation.

At low pH insulin is highly prone to self-assembly into amyloid fibrils. The process has been proposed to be affected by the existence of secondary nucleation pathways, in which already formed fibrils are able to catalyze the formation of new fibrils. In this work, we studied the fibrillation process of human insulin in a wide range of protein concentrations. Thioflavin T fluorescence was used for its ability to selectively detect amyloid fibrils, by mechanisms that involve the interaction between the dye and the accessible surface of the fibrils. Surfactants are often employed to stabilize protein formulations and reduce the risk of aggregation. The generalized H-point standard-additions method (GHPSAM) is used in order to obtain the total Cr(VI) and chromate concentration in water samples whose matrices are completely unknown. Moreover, a new methodology, which is a modification of the GHPSAM, is proposed for the simultaneous determination of the two major chemical forms of Cr(VI) present in the sample. The method is based on the location of spectral intervals where the behaviour of the interferent absorbance can be considered as linear. We study theoretically the transport and kinetic processes underlying the operation of a biosensor (particularly the surface plasmon sensor "Biacore") used to study the surface binding kinetics of biomolecules in solution to immobilized receptors. Unlike previous studies, we concentrate mainly on the modeling of system-specific phenomena rather than on the influence of mass transport limitations on the intrinsic kinetic rate constants determined from binding data. Selection and characterization of adsorbents for the analysis of an explosive-related molecule traces in the air

International audience; This study is focused on the development of a 3D micro-preconcentrator for a sensitive analysis of an explosive-related compound: orthonitrotoluene (ONT). A set of potentially efficient adsorbents for the pre-concentration of ONT was investigated here. An in-depth characterization of their textural properties was carried out in order to better understand their adsorption behavior toward the target analyte. A Teflon-like coating is the key for the boost in sensitivity of quartz microbalances for the tracing of airborne analytes. Since the undesired signals for the interfering compounds are suppressed and the ones for the targeted compounds (e.g., peroxide explosives) are enhanced, the PCA output is improved.
