Isomorphous replacement of MII ions in MII–GdIII dimers (MII = CuII, MnII, NiII, CoII, ZnII): magnetic studies of the products

2011

Complexes [M(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)pyC(OH)(OEt)py}₃](ClO₄)₂·EtOH [M(II) = Cu(II) (1), Mn(II) (2), Ni(II) (3), Co(II) (4) and Zn(II) (5)] crystallize in the monoclinic Cc space group and contain one hexacoordinate M(II) ion and one enneacoordinate Gd(III) ion, bridged by three {pyCO(OEt)pyC(OH)(OEt)py}⁻ ligands. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a ferromagnetic interaction for 1 and antiferromagnetic interactions for 2-4. Using the Ĥ = -JŜ(Gd(III))Ŝ(M(II)) spin Hamiltonian formalism, fits to the magnetic susceptibility data yielded J values of +0.32 cm⁻¹ for 1, -1.7 cm⁻¹ for 2, and -0.22 cm⁻¹ for 3. In complex 4, the orbital contributions of Co(II) precluded the determination of th…

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in pseudooctahedral cobalt(ii) complexes with positive axial and large rhombic anisotropy

2019

The preparation, X-ray crystal structure, spectroscopic and variable-temperature dc and ac magnetic properties of two six-coordinate cobalt(ii) complexes of formula [Co(bim)4(tcm)2] (1) and [Co(bmim)4(tcm)2] (2) (bim = 1-benzylimidazole, bmim = 1-benzyl-2-methylbenzimidazole and tcm- = tricyanomethanide ion) are reported. 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic P21/n and C2/c space groups with the asymmetric units composed of one tcm- ion and half the [Co(bim)4]2+ and [Co(bmim)4]2+ complex cations, respectively. Their cobalt atoms are in compressed (1)/rhombic (2) CoN6 octahedral environments, the axial positions being occupied by monodentate tricyanomethanide anions. The neutral molecules in…

Microstructure and magnetic properties of colloidal cobalt nano-clusters

2010

The magnetic response of nanometer sized Co nanoparticles (NP) prepared using reverse micelle solutions are presented. The use of complementary structural and morphological probes (like transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy) allowed to relate the magnetic properties to the size, morphology, composition and atomic structure of the nanoparticles. All data agree on the presence of a coreshell structure of NPs made of a metallic Co core surrounded by a thin Co-oxide layer. The coreshell microstructure of NPs affects its magnetic response mainly raising the anisotropy constant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Segmented Thermoelectric Oxide-Based Module for High-Temperature Waste Heat Harvesting

2015

We report a high-performance thermoelectric (TE) oxide-based module using the segmentation of half-Heusler Ti_(0.3)Zr_(0.35)Hf_(0.35)CoSb_(0.8)Sn_(0.2) and misfit-layered cobaltite Ca_3Co_4O_(9+δ) as the p-leg and 2 % Al-doped ZnO as the n-leg. The maximum output power of a 4-couple segmented module at ΔT=700 K attains a value of approximately 6.5 kW m^(−2), which is three times higher than that of the best reported non-segmented oxide module. The TE properties of individual legs, as well as the interfacial contact resistances, were characterized as a function of temperature. Numerical modeling was used to predict the efficiency and to evaluate the influence of the electrical and thermal lo…

Mechanism of crystallization of Co-cordierites from stoichiometric powdered glasses

2002

Abstract The influence of cobalt, as a divalent cation, on the crystallization behaviour of the cordierite based glasses was studied. Powdered glass specimens of stoichiometric composition 2MO 2Al 2 O 3 5SiO 2 (M=Co and/or Mg) were obtained and thermally treated at several temperatures and times, and the sequence of crystallization and their microstructural evolution were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Results on the crystallization sequence showed that the steps in the crystallization path are independent of the nature of the divalent cation. The first crystalline phase detected displayed the μ-cordierite structure, i.e. a solid…

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Cobalt Hexacyanoferrate

2010

Cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) nanoparticles have been synthesized by mixing aqueous solutions of K3Fe(CN)6 and CoCl2 under vigorous stirring at different temperatures and following two different procedures, drop-by-drop or immediate mixing. The resulting CoHCF nanoparticles, with dimensions of several tens of nanometers, were characterized using TEM, SEM-EDX, IR, and XRD. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated in comparison with the CoHCF powder bulk compound. The CoHCF nanoparticles exhibit an electrochemically driven conversion to the bulk one that has been investigated by a chemometric approach in order to establish the best synthetic parameters. The rate and the degree of con…

Software-supported image quantification of angiogenesis in an in vitro culture system: application to studies of biocompatibility

2002

Healing of soft tissue trauma and bone discontinuities following implantation involves acute inflammatory reactions and the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis). During angiogenesis new capillary vessels arise from the existing vasculature. Endothelial cells (EC) are the major cell type involved in angiogenesis. Corrosion of orthopaedic metallic implant materials (e.g. CoCr alloys) can cause locally high concentrations of heavy metal ions in the peri-implant tissues. Some divalent metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+) lead to the activation of EC in vitro. Upon exposure to these ions. EC release cytokines and chemokines and increase the expression of cell surface adhesion molecules, which repr…

Detection and monitoring of carbon monoxide using cobalt corroles film on Love wave devices with delay line configuration

2011

Among specific sensitive materials synthesized for chemical sensor development, cobalt corrole have shown attractive capabilities for CO detection [1, 2]. In this paper, we investigate the possibility to exploit such materials to develop surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based sensors. We actually demonstrate that SAW devices using delay line configuration allow investigating the molecular recognition occurring in non-conductive sensing layers of cobalt corroles. We have monitored phase variations of SAW devices versus various CO concentrations. Moreover, a specific testing setup has been developed to precisely dose CO at low concentrations, to avoid any CO leakage in the environment, to systemat…

Strontium and iron-doped barium cobaltite prepared by solution combustion synthesis: exploring a mixed-fuel approach for tailored intermediate temper…

2013

Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-? (BSCF) powders were prepared by solution combustion synthesis using single and double fuels. The effect of the fuel mixture on the main properties of this well-known solid oxide fuel cell cathode material with high oxygen ion and electronic conduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the fuel mixture significantly affected the area-specific resistance of the BSCF cathode materials, by controlling the oxygen deficiency and stabilizing the Co2+ oxidation state. It was demonstrated that high fuel-to-metal cations molar ratios and high reducing power of the combustion fuel mixture are mainly responsible for the decreasing of the area-specific resistance o…
