Cortical processing of musical sounds in children with Cochlear Implants

Abstract Objective We studied the neurocognitive mechanisms of musical instrument sound perception in children with Cochlear Implants (CIs) and in children with normal hearing (NH). Methods ERPs were recorded in a new multi-feature change-detection paradigm. Three magnitudes of change in fundamental frequency, musical instrument, duration, intensity increments and decrements, and presence of a temporal gap were presented amongst repeating 295 Hz piano tones. Independent Component Analysis was utilized to remove artifacts caused by the Cochlear Implants. Cochlear implant users move in time to the beat of drum music.

2015

Cochlear implant users show a profile of residual, yet poorly understood, musical abilities. An ability that has received little to no attention in this population is entrainment to a musical beat. We show for the first time that a heterogeneous group of cochlear implant users is able to find the beat and move their bodies in time to Latin Merengue music, especially when the music is presented in unpitched drum tones. Treatment of acute mastoiditis in children with cochlear implants

Abstract Introduction Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a paediatric infectious complication that raises a specific problem in case of implanted patients. Objective To review the cases of AM in a paediatric cochlear implant (CI) programme to study its incidence and associated problems. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted on 248 children aged between 8 months and 14 years who underwent CI from 1994 to 2009. Decision making for solitary vestibular schwannoma and contralateral Meniere's disease.

The existence of dual inner ear pathology such as unilateral Meniere’s disease (MD) with a contralateral vestibular schwannoma (VS) is very rare, but provides the otologist with a significant management dilemma. In this study, we present 5 cases of unilateral disabling MD with a contralateral VS in the better hearing ear. Conservative management of the VS is mandated unless there are impending complications, with management directed toward controlling the vertigo attributed to MD. If and when the VS requires intervention, or the hearing in that ear deteriorates to unserviceable levels, cochlear implant of the ear affected by MD prior to addressing the VS provides optimal management.
