Low Complexity Image Compression using Pruned 8-point DCT Approximation in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks
2017
International audience; Since the transmission of the uncompressed image in the context of wireless visual sensor networks (WVSNs) consumes less energy than transmitting the compressed image, developing energy-aware compression algorithms are mandatory to extend the camera node's lifetime and thereby the whole network lifetime. The present paper studies a low-complexity image compression algorithm in the context of WVSNs. This algorithm consists of applying a pruning approach on a DCT approximation transform. The scheme is investigated in terms of computation cycles, processing time, energy consumption and image quality. Experimental works are conducted using the Atmel Atmega128 processor o…
On the Statistical Analysis of Equal Gain Combining over Multiple Double Rice Fading Channels in Cooperative Networks
2010
This article analyzes the statistical properties of narrowband mobile-to-mobile (M2M) fading channels with equal gain combining (EGC) under line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions. Here, we study a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF)relay network. It is assumed that there can exist LOS components in the transmission links between the source mobile station and the destination mobile station via K mobile relays. In order to cater for asymmetric fading conditions in the relay links, the received signal envelope at the output of the equal gain (EG) combiner is thus modeled as a sum of K double Rice processes. These processes are considered to be independent but not necessarily identically dist…
Decoding the XXI Century’s Marketing Shift: An Agency Theory Framework
2016
Since the beginning of the XXI century, marketing theory has moved through a series of epistemological shifts from modern positivism to postmodern constructivism. This has resulted in a series of changes to the main concepts of “traditional” marketing such as: market, product, customer, and value. These shifts can be better viewed under a social cybernetics approach such as agency theory. This is because there is now a view that the linear concept of value creation needs to give way to the more complex process of value cocreation, where value is created collectively. Agency theory is one approach that is able to shed light on how customers and providers are able to recursively create collec…
From decoding a graph to processing a multimodal message: Interacting with data visualization in the news media
2020
Abstract Data visualisation – in the forms of graphs, charts, and maps – represents a text type growing in prevalence and impact in many cultural domains; education, journalism, business, PR, and more. Research on data visualisation reception is scarce, particularly that related to interactive and dynamic forms of data visualisation in digital media. Taking an approach inspired by grounded theory, in this article I investigate the ways in which young students interact with data visualisations found in digital news media. Combining observations from reading sessions with ten in-depth interviews, I investigate how the informants read, interpreted, and responded emotionally to data visualisati…
Meter for the Quantitative Analysis of Newspaper Sport Material
2016
This article presents a meter for the quantitative analysis of newspaper sport material. The meter makes it possible to measure and classify newspaper sport material in detail. The meter has three levels. The selected level depends on the research purpose and desired measurement accuracy. Measurement can focus on a certain level, or all levels can be used together. Individual variables can also be utilized at a certain level. The three levels with respective level units of observation are: 1) articles, photos, and graphics; 2) sets of articles; and 3) sets of data materials. The use of each level is presented in the article. The article also contains a summary of the newspaper sport materia…
Ant crickets and their secrets: Myrmecophilus acervorum is not always parthenogenetic (Insecta: Orthoptera: Myrmecophilidae)
2021
Abstract Previously considered as a thelytokous parthenogenetic species, the widespread ant cricket Myrmecophilus acervorum actually turns out to have a mixed reproductive system: our recent surveys in the central part of its distribution area has revealed the presence of both sexes. Detailed morphological and morphometric descriptions of the previously unknown males are here provided. New data on species distribution in south-eastern Europe are presented, including the first records of M. balcanicus in Bulgaria and of M. nonveilleri in Bulgaria and Hungary. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses have revealed several haplotypes of M. acervorum in Europe, with six of them forming a parth…
Generalized Dimension Distortion under Mappings of Sub-Exponentially Integrable Distortion
2010
We prove a dimension distortion estimate for mappings of sub-exponentially integrable distortion in Euclidean spaces, which is essentially sharp in the plane.
Formal verification of a Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest MAC protocol
2012
Author's version of an article published in the journal: Computer Standards & Interfaces. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.csi.2011.12.001 Cooperative communications, in which a relay node helps the source node to deliver its packets to the destination node, are able to obtain significant benefits in terms of transmission reliability, coverage extension and energy efficiency. A Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (C-ARQ) MAC protocol has been recently proposed to exploit cooperative diversity at the MAC layer. in this paper, we validate the integrity and the validity of the C-ARQ protocol using formal methods. The protocol logic is modeled in SDL and implem…
The nature of quantities influences the representation of arithmetic problems: evidence from drawings and solving procedures in children and adults
2017
International audience; When solving arithmetic problems, semantic factors influence the representations built (Gamo, Sander & Richard, 2010). In order to specify such interpretative processes, we created structurally isomorphic word problems that could be solved with two distinct algorithms. We tested whether a distinction between cardinal and ordinal quantities would lead solvers, due to their daily-life knowledge, to build different representations, influencing their strategies as well as the nature of their drawings. We compared 5th grade children and adults in order to assess the validity of this hypothesis with participants of varying arithmetic proficiency. The results confirmed that…
Eukaryotic snoRNAs: a paradigm for gene expression flexibility.
2009
AbstractSmall nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are one of the most ancient and numerous families of non-protein-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The main function of snoRNAs – to guide site-specific rRNA modification – is the same in Archaea and all eukaryotic lineages. In contrast, as revealed by recent genomic and RNomic studies, their genomic organization and expression strategies are the most varied. Seemingly snoRNA coding units have adopted, in the course of evolution, all the possible ways of being transcribed, thus providing a unique paradigm of gene expression flexibility. By focusing on representative fungal, plant and animal genomes, we review here all the documented types of snoRNA gene organizati…
