Learning, teaching and integration of adult migrants in Finland

2017

Learning a new vocation or re-learning one that was previously mastered is considered one of the essential pathways for migrant integration into the Finnish labour market. Thus, vocational educators should have competencies that support teaching adults with diverse educational, vocational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds, and enhance their participation in the learning community. This research examines learning, teaching, and integration of adult migrants in Finland. The study analyses what educators and adult migrant students focus on when talking about learning and teaching. First, the aim was to gain an understanding of the core aspects that trainers and migrant students refer to wh…

Wunderheilung eine Fundamental Theologische Untersuchung

2019

Social mirrors. Tove Jansson’sInvisibleChildand the importance of being seen

2016

ABSTRACTThis article examines the experience of being seen and analyzes its central role in the formation of a coherent sense of self. Tove Jansson’s short story from 1962, ‘The Invisible Child’, serves as the red thread of the article, and the story is analyzed in the light of Donald Winnicott’s work on social mirroring. The analysis is enriched by the psychoanalytic insights of Veikko Tahka and Heinz Kohut, and complemented by Axel Honneth’s philosophical elaborations as well as by recent developmental findings as presented by Vasudevi Reddy. The article is divided into an introduction and three sections. After summarizing Jansson’s story in the introduction, the first section elaborates …

Mitochondrial cannabinoid receptors gate corticosterone impact on novel object recognition

2023

: Corticosteroid-mediated stress responses require the activation of complex brain circuits involving mitochondrial activity, but the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are scantly known. The endocannabinoid system is implicated in stress coping, and it can directly regulate brain mitochondrial functions via type 1 cannabinoid (CB1) receptors associated with mitochondrial membranes (mtCB1). In this study, we show that the impairing effect of corticosterone in the novel object recognition (NOR) task in mice requires mtCB1 receptors and the regulation of mitochondrial calcium levels in neurons. Different brain circuits are modulated by this mechanism to mediate the impact of cortico…

Ethica cordis

2007

Discourse ethics is the best foundation for the civil ethics of a morally pluralist society, but only on condition that it does not remain m…

The developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance in kindergarten and elementary school

2012

Besides cognitive factors, children's learning at school may be influenced by more dynamic phenomena, such as motivation and achievement-related task-avoidant behavior. The present study examined the developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance from kindergarten to Grade 4. A total of 225 children were tested for their arithmetic skills in kindergarten and in Grades 1, 2, and 4 of elementary school. Children's task-avoidant behavior in learning situations was rated by their teachers. The results of latent growth curve analyses showed that math performance and task-avoidant behavior develop in tandem: an increase in task-avoidant behavior was related to less improvem…
