Évaluer la démocratisation de l'enseignement : la situation française à l'épreuve des comparaisons internationales
2000
Democratization is quite a difficult question, from both a methodological and theoretical point of view, especially when international comparisons are aimed at. Must one consider this process like the diffusion of the good, or focus on competition between groups for acceeding to it ? Indicators will not be the same, neither results, according to the perspective adopted. European comparisons show that if a majority of countries has chosen to equalize educational opportunities through opening access to school, less numerous are those which have tried to act more directly upon the inequalities conveyed by its operating. France has chosen the openness strategy with some delay, one factor being …
‘Drawing’ conclusions : Irish primary school children’s understanding of physical education and physical activity opportunities outside of school
2017
This study explores the relationship between primary school physical education and physical activity as sites for the practice of physical activity of Irish primary school children. Understanding how children make connections between physical activity sites is important in shaping physical education experiences that promote lifelong participation. Children’s (aged 8–11) awareness, knowledge, and understanding of physical activity and physical education were examined using participatory methods of ‘draw and write’ ( n = 135) and focus group interviews ( n = 34). In Phase 1, data collection focused on physical activity, while Phase 2 focused on physical education and connections between phys…

Smart Pedagogy for Technology-Enhanced Learning
2018
The progress of technology has raised challenges to the educational environment, so it is necessary to search for answers to the questions: How can one teach better? How can one scaffold the student in the learning process? What kind of competencies should be developed? What competencies do teachers need? What kind of technology should be used or not be used? This chapter analyses the role of pedagogy for education and outlines the risks for cognitive development that may result from the introduction of technology without an understanding of pedagogical principles. These risks are defined as a centrifugal effect that can be mitigated by integrating technology into the educational process us…

The role of moral disengagement and cognitive distortions toward children among sex offenders

A semistructured interview was administered to collect data about family, social and medical histories, utilizing the Moral Disengagement Scale and the Hanson Sex Attitude Questionnaire. Results showed that sex offenders with sexual abuse trauma in their past had higher scores of moral disengagement and cognitive distortion toward children than sex offenders without sexual abuse trauma. In particular, the highest levels of moral disengagement, cognitive distortions related to children as sexual objects and sexua…
Recognition and the Other in Social Work
2020
Abstract Axel Honneth’s recognition theory is a useful ethical framework for social work. Stephen Webb connects it straightforwardly with the relativistic ethical tradition that arguably emphasises the role of differences too much. However, this article shows that an alternative objectivist reading of recognition theory evades Webb’s critique and describes a balanced attitude towards otherness, fitting the practical field of social work. A detailed picture of recognition theory also reveals how it can be utilised in macro-level social critique. Contrary to what Webb claims, it is important that social workers generally respect differences in their work. Unfortunately, every attempt to under…
Schelling, esotericism and the meaning of life
2019
Abstract F.W.J. Schelling argues in his middle period work Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom that will should be understood as the most fundamental constitutive element of reality. Though it is often downplayed in recent scholarship, Schelling derived his most central ideas for this work more or less directly from the theosophy of Jacob Boehme. I will argue that far from peripheral and antiquated curiosity, Schelling´s esoteric influences constitute the very foundation of his middle period thought. Schelling´s affinity to esotericism enabled him to develop a form of pantheism, which is not tied to the familiar problematic aspects of traditional Christian and post-Chri…
