Level of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D in Pediatric Arthritis Patients
2019
Abstract Vitamin D deficiency is common and widespread globally. Vitamin D has an immunomodulatory effect, but it is still unclear whether its deficiency is associated with higher disease activity. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the serum concentration of vitamin D in children with paediatric arthritis (juvenile idiopathic arthritis and reactive arthritis). Prevalence of hypo-vitaminosis D among 98 children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and reactive arthritis was determined and association between serum concentration of vitamin D and disease activity markers was found. Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among children included in this study was 69.07%. Children wi…
Local complications associated with labial salivary gland biopsy for diagnosis of Sjögren?s Syndrome : a retrospective cohort study
2019
Background To describe local or systemic complications related to the labial salivary glands biopsy (LSGB) used as diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome (SS). Material and methods Clinical databases from a cohort of patients, who underwent LSGB with provisional clinical diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome, were retrospectively reviewed. Pain, assessed by registering the intake of analgesic drugs in the first week following the biopsy, and any further relevant clinical information regarding complications after biopsy were recorded. Results 50 patients received LSGB. 10 of them (9 women and 1 man) showed histopathological findings compatible with SS. Ten patient (20%) receiving …
THU0520 Assessment of cardiovascular risk in patients with fibromyalgia by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity – results of a prospective study
2018
Background Autonomic dysfunction, a basic element of fibromyalgia (FM), has been in some cases related to increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease. CV risk associates with aortic stiffness, which can be reliably assessed by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). Objectives Aims of this study were to test the hypothesis of increased cfPWV in a group of patients with FM and to examine its association with FM associated parameters and selected traditional CV risk factors. Methods We performed measurements of cfPWV in 99 FM patients and 102 healthy controls. The difference between cfPWV values in the two groups after controlling for possible confounding factors was evaluated through …

Background: We prospectively tested technical feasibility and clinical outcome of percutaneous ultrasound-guided tenotomy of long head of biceps tendon (LHBT). Methods: We included 11 patients (6 women; age: 73 ± 8.6 years) with symptomatic full-thickness rotator cuff tear and intact LHBT, in whom surgical repair was not possible/refused. After ultrasound-guided injection of local anesthetic, the LHBT was cut with a scalpel under continuous ultrasound monitoring until it became no longer visible. Pain was recorded before and at least six months after procedure. An eight-item questionnaire was administered to patients at follow-up. Results: A median of 4 tendon cuts were needed to ensure com…
Arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the 4th and 5th finger using an interlocking screw device to treat severe recurrence of Dupuytre…
2018
Abstract Objective To assess the radiological and functional outcome of arthrodesis of the 4th and 5th finger using the APEX™ (Extremity Medical, Parsippany, NJ) intermedullary interlocking screw system in patients with severe recurrence of Dupuytren's disease. Materials and method The DASH questionnaire and the VAS scale were used to assess the clinical outcomes. The angle of arthrodesis, fusion time and implant fixation were evaluated on X-rays. The patients were monitored for complications during surgery and the follow-up period. Results The sample comprised 6 patients. Mean follow up was 19.6 months. All of the patients presented clinical and radiological evidence of fusion at 8 weeks, …
A prospective study of food preferences in childhood
2004
Abstract This study has evaluated the impact of food choices at 2–3 years old on food preferences later in life, by following up the same subjects. Early preferences were estimated through recordings of food choices conducted in a nursery canteen in children aged 2–3, from 1982 to 1999. The children were free to choose the composition of their lunch from among a varied offering of eight dishes. The same subjects ( n =341) were contacted in 2001–2002 and so their ages varied from 17–22 ( n =91), 13–16 ( n =68), 8–12 ( n =99) to 4–7 ( n =83). Their present preference for the 80 foods most frequently presented at the nursery canteen was assessed through a questionnaire. Five food categories we…
Population-based cohort study of warfarin-treated patients with atrial fibrillation: incidence of cardiovascular and bleeding outcomes
2014
OBJECTIVES: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac rhythm disorder with a significant health burden. The aim of this study was to characterise patients with recently diagnosed AF and to estimate the rates of comorbidities and outcome events requiring hospitalisation in routine clinical practice. DESIGN: Pharmacoepidemiological cohort study using observational data. METHODS/SETTING: This study included 16 513 patients with a first diagnosis of AF between 1 January 2005 and 28 February 2010 (newly diagnosed patients) using data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) linked to Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and the Office for National Statistics mortality data. …

[The impact of COVID-19 on hand surgery: a French retrospective comparative study in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 hand trauma centers].
2021
Introduction: En 2020, la pandémie a divisé la France en zone COVID-19 et non COVID-19.
Employment trajectories until midlife associate with early social role investments and current work-related well-being
2021
Applying social investment theory (SIT), we examined whether employment trajectories until midlife, with differential investments in education and employment, are associated with social investments during early life and with work-related well-being in midlife, with a special reference to potential differences between self-employment and paid work. In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6496; 2963 men, 3533 women), life-history calendars from age 16 to 45 were used to determine the respondents’ yearly employment statuses (student, full-time employee, part-time employee, self-employed, unemployed, on parental leave, on sabbatical leave or otherwise not working). Latent class analysis …
