Variant Arterial Supply of the Descending Colon by the Coeliac Trunk: A Case Report

Background and Objectives: Knowledge of arterial variations of the intestines is of great importance in visceral surgery and interventional radiology. Materials and Methods: An unusual variation in the blood supply of the descending colon was observed in a Caucasian female body donor. Results: In this case, the left colic artery that regularly derives from the inferior mesenteric artery supplying the descending colon was instead a branch of the common hepatic artery. Conclusions: Here, we describe the very rare case of an aberrant left colic artery arising from the common hepatic artery in a dissection study.

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a sedative drug used in drug-facilitated crimes. Its detection window is very short. GHB undergoes intensive phase I metabolism to organic acids (glycolic acid, succinic acid, dihydroxybutyric acids). These could be potential analytical targets to broaden the detection window. Compromised integrity of excised porcine intestinal epithelium obtained from the abattoir affects the outcome of in vitro particle uptake studies

Excised porcine intestinal tissue obtained from the local abattoir was studied for its suitability to examine the uptake and transport of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles in Peyer's (PP) and non-Peyer's patch (NPP) tissue in vitro. Incubation of such tissue with fluorescent PLGA and polystyrene particles revealed negligible uptake into the intercellular space with no noticeable difference between PP and NPP tissue. Similarly, yeast cells, which were used as a positive control for selective uptake into PP tissue, were found in the subepithelial area of both PP and NPP tissue. Impact of Age and Comorbidity on Multimodal Management and Survival from Colorectal Cancer : A Population-Based Study

This retrospective population-based study examined the impact of age and comorbidity burden on multimodal management and survival from colorectal cancer (CRC). From 2000 to 2015, 1479 consecutive patients, who underwent surgical resection for CRC, were reviewed for age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI) including 19 well-defined weighted comorbidities. The impact of ACCI on multimodal management and survival was compared between low (score 0–2), intermediate (score 3) and high ACCI (score ≥ 4) groups. Severe infantile colic and food intolerance: A long-term prospective study

To determine the relationship between infantile colic and cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) in formula-fed infants, 70 infants (38 male, 32 female) were selected, with mean age 30.2 +/- 21.4 days, with severe colic (duration of crying greater than 4 h per day for 5 days per week). In 50 of the infants in the study group (71.4%) there was a remission of symptoms when cow's milk protein (CMP) was eliminated from the diet. Two successive challenges caused the return of symptoms in all these 50 infants.
