Fishery-dependent and -independent data lead to consistent estimations of essential habitats

2016

AbstractSpecies mapping is an essential tool for conservation programmes as it provides clear pictures of the distribution of marine resources. However, in fishery ecology, the amount of objective scientific information is limited and data may not always be directly comparable. Information about the distribution of marine species can be derived from two main sources: fishery-independent data (scientific surveys at sea) and fishery-dependent data (collection and sampling by observers in commercial vessels). The aim of this paper is to compare whether these two different sources produce similar, complementary, or different results. We compare them in the specific context of identifying the Es…

Regarding TDS concentrations collected waters can be subdivided into low salinity (up to 1.5 g/L) brackish (up to 20 g/L) and saline (up to 43 g/L). The medium high salinities can be justified by mixing with sea water and/or strong waterrock interaction processes. Isotope composition of O and H ranges from 12.7 to +2.7 ‰ SMOW and from 91 to +12 ‰ SMOW respectively and is generally comprised between the Global Meteoric Water Line and the East Mediterranean Meteoric Water Line. Only few water samples show a positive shift for δ18O possibly related to high temperature waterrock interaction processes. Moreover the majority of them is found along the coast as well as in islands of the Aegean Sea and thus thermal water is often brackish to saline due to marine intrusion into costal aquifer. In the present study almost 300 thermal and cold mineral water samples were collected along the Hellenic territory with their physicochemical parameters (temperature pH electrical conductivity and Eh) and the amount of bicarbonates (titration with 0.1N HCl) being determined in situ. Additionally gases found either in free or dissolved phase were sampled. Both water and gas samples were analysed at the INGVPa laboratories for major ions (Ion Chromatography) silica (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry) chemical composition of free and dissolved gases (Gas Chromatography) water isotopes (O and H) and carbon and helium isotopes of free and dissolved gases (Mass Spectrometry). The temperature of the investigated waters ranges from 6.5 to 98°C pH from 1.96 to 11.98 whilst Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) from 0.06 to 43 g/L. Based on the temperature parameter waters can be divided into four groups: i) cold (&lt0.5 913000 μmol/mol) are the prevailing gas species found in the studied sites. 2013

In this article the fi rst results of the performance analysis of the photovoltaic glassblock are given. The photovoltaic glassblock is an innovative product which integrates third generation solar cells (DSSC) invented for the construction of translucent building envelopes energetically effi cient and “active” able to reduce the energy consumption in buildings and to produce at the same time green energy. The analysis was conducted on four different hypotheses of integration through numerical simulations in order to evaluate the energy absorption and the optical performance of the device. The software simulations represent a fi rst step for the understanding of the performance of the element and prelude to an experimental analysis session. The results of a research conducted about national and international patents publications on the DSSC technology and its applications will be illustrated too. The data collected during this research had been organized in a digital database.Settore ICAR/10 - Architettura Tecnica

Diagnosis and therapeutic management of primary headache in an emergency setting

2013

Introduction and aim: Much headachers are under or mis-diagnoses and data regarding the proportion of patients attending an emergency department (ED) because of headache are still few. We conducted a retrospective observational study in an ED with the following aims: (a) estimate the proportion of headache attending to an ED (b) to estimate and describe the therapeutic management of primary headache and (c) to assessment the exam most frequently requested. Materials and methods: We collected data regarding patients diagnosed with headache consecutively attending the ED of the University of Palermo between September 2011 and March 2012. The study was approved by the ethics committee. Results: Between the semester evaluated 25110 subjects were admitted to ED headache suffers were equal to 1.6 %. Of these 263 (63.1 %) were woman and 154 (36.9 %). Mean age was 44.2 (DS ± 18.4) years (p = 0.068).According to ED registry headache admission was as follow assigned: 76.5 % with a diagnosis of headache 22.8 % with a secondary headache 0.7 % with Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalgias (TACs). Among those with a primary headache about 36 % of patient did not received a pharmacological treatment. Monotherapy was prescribed less frequently than combination therapy (19.1 vs 44.5 %).In monotherapy the most frequent medication were NSAIDs (28.3 %) benzodiazepines (26.7 %) and dopamine antagonists (11.7 %). Among those with a primary headache a CT scan was performed in the 124 subjects and 111 (34.8 %) had a neurologist consultation. Discussion: Our data are in line with the one previously reported in literature. The most frequently medication in the Italian ED were NSAIDs benzodiazepines dopamine antagonists and steroids. Neverless our data unlikely can be compared to other study give a snapshot. We believe that much more can be done to improve treatment of primary headache in ED.Settore MED/26 - Neurologia

Early and midterm outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds for ostial coronary lesions: insights from the GHOST-EU registry.

2016

Aims: We aimed to investigate the outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) in coronary ostial lesions. Ostial lesions represent a challenging angiographic subset, with higher event rates compared with non-ostial lesions. BVS might be associated with advantages over the long term, but their safety in this setting remains to be explored. Methods and results: Procedural and 12-month follow-up data from consecutive patients treated with BVS for lesions located at the ostium of the right (RCA), left anterior (LAD) or circumflex (LCX) coronary in 11 European centres were collected. The primary device-oriented endpoint was defined as a combination of cardiovascular death, target vessel m…

I tamburi a cornice in Sicilia

2015

Queste, sebbene affini a quelle impiegate in altre regioni italian…

Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaFirst evidences of frame drums in Sicily trace back to the V century b.C. Tambourines have been recorded until today by paintings archive documentation observations provided by foreign travellers folkloric literature and quite widely by modern ethnomusicology through audio and video recordings collected on the field. Morphology performance techniques repertoires decorations and social use of tambourines in Sicily refer to the wider context of Italian (central-southern part) and Mediteranean area but with some peculiarities chiefly referring to performance skills. Though similar to the techniques practised in other Italian regions in Sicily we can observe a typical style that can be connected with a common historical background with the Arabic-Islamic world.

Collectivités et prestataires de services : enquête exploratoire pour la collecte des déchets ménagers

2006

Private management of local waste has been scarcely studied although this question shows an original technico-institutionnal pattern in the field of local urban management. Under the rule of the “Code des marchés publics”, arrangements are made on a pluriannual basis. Such a legal framework is supposed to imply competitive procedure and thus to strengthen the decision making process of local authorities. Yet, the actual control of public authorities over this relationship is put under question. This article – based on a number of empirical studies — deals with this matter. It reveals what is at stake by studying closely the actual process of a contract between a local authority and a firm.
