Romanian adoptive families: Stressors, coping strategies and resources
2012
Abstract This study was undertaken to describe the stressors that the Romanian adoptive families confront with, during the different stages of their life cycle, the coping strategies that they adopt and the resources needed and available to them to respond to these stressors. It was used a purposive sample, composed of nine mothers that have adopted children between five months and five years old. The technique used for the data collection was the narrative interview. The main emergent themes in the interviews have been: the desire to have a child and the infertility; the adoption procedure; the uncertainty regarding the moment of placement; the instant adoption of the parental role-status;…
Capturing daily family dynamics via text messages: development of the mobile diary
2010
In this paper we introduce a new tool, the mobile phone, for use in diary research. We demonstrate, with reference to two family studies conducted in Finland, how daily family dynamics can be captured by using the mobile diary. In both studies family members sent text messages (SMSs) in answer to structured diary questions three times a day over a one-week period. The participants kept also paper-and-pencil diaries. Two mobile diary items measuring mood (stressfulness and feelings of competence) both at home and at work are reported here as examples. For both items we found statistically significant daily and weekly variation as well as individual fluctuation. The data gathered by the mobil…
Applying a Data Quality Model to Experiments in Software Engineering
2014
Data collection and analysis are key artifacts in any software engineering experiment. However, these data might contain errors. We propose a Data Quality model specific to data obtained from software engineering experiments, which provides a framework for analyzing and improving these data. We apply the model to two controlled experiments, which results in the discovery of data quality problems that need to be addressed. We conclude that data quality issues have to be considered before obtaining the experimental results.

Integration of foreign trade and maritime transport statistics in Spain
2010
This article aims to contribute to improving maritime trade data by analysing the possibility of integrating in a single enlarged databank two different databases: the Spanish foreign trade and maritime transport datasets. The methodology adopted consisted of studying the primary sources providing data compiled in the foreign trade and maritime traffic databases, analysing the electronic processes used by informants and data collectors and examining the linkages between the different electronic messages involved. Once the links between the trade and sea transport documents and electronic messages were found, a solution for integrating both databases was envisaged. The main outcome is a new …
An institutional analysis of the implication of the MAS change process for the evolution of SMSC efficiency
2009
CSCW '98 workshop program
1998
This workshop will discuss different approaches used to evaluate CSCW systems. Our goal is to produce a taxonomy of evaluation methodologies for CSCW systems, idenillYing the type of systems for \\hich a technique is most useful, the stage of development in \\bich a methodology is appropriate, the resources needed to conduct an evaluation, and the appropriate measures for the various techniques. We plan to discuss various methods of data collection for collaborative work and identi1)' the evaluation methodologies for \\hich various types of data collection are most appropriate. Other issues we hope to discuss during the workshop include sharing and comparing collected data, the usefulness o…
A longitudinal transitional perspective on why adolescents choose to quit organized sport in Norway
2021
Abstract The present study used a prospective cohort design to explore the reasons why young athletes decided to quit playing handball. The theoretical underpinnings were drawn from the fields of career transition, motivation, and meaningful experiences in organized youth sport. Thirty-four athletes were included in a larger research project exploring the complex interplay of psychosocial factors during the transition period from lower-to upper-secondary school in Norway. In this study, the data collection involved three sources: individual interviews with the 10 athletes who decided to leave their teams during the study period (five girls and five boys), and individual open-ended questionn…

Interprofessional collaboration during an emergency ward’s rounds
2015
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore interprofessional collaboration during ward rounds on a Finnish emergency and infection ward from the viewpoint of three central professional groups: physicians, nurses and secretaries. Design/methodology/approach – The authors utilise an ethnographically informed approach, with observations and interviews as the data collection devices. The data comprise ten interviews with staff members and ten hours of observations. The data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. Findings – The ward rounds were found to be rather physician- and medicine-centred, and mostly not interprofessional. Nurses and secretaries in particular expressed …
