Preparation and photoactivity of nanostructured TiO2 particles obtained by hydrolysis of TiCl4

2005

This work reports the preparation of nanostructured polycrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts obtained by hydrolysis of TiCl4 in very mild conditions. Several samples were prepared as suspensions or colloidal dispersions by using TiCl4/H2O volume ratios ranging between 1:1 and 1:100. The samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, specific surface area determination, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. 4-Nitrophenol photodegradation was used as probe reaction to test the photoactivity of the catalysts. Some samples revealed a photoactivity higher than that of Degussa P25 in similar experimental conditions and the most photoactive one was that prepared …

Passive Transport of Ionic Drugs through Membranes with pH-Dependent Fixed Charges

2001

We have studied both theoretically and experimentally the passive transport of ionic drugs through membranes with pH-dependent fixed charge. The system considered constitutes a simplified model for pH-controlled drug delivery through membranes of biochemical and pharmaceutical interest. The theoretical approach employed is based on the Nernst-Planck flux equations and all of the species present in the system (the neutral or ionic drug and the hydrogen and hydroxide ions) have been taken into account together with a Langmuir-type isotherm for the adsorption of the ionic drug onto the membrane surface. The membrane permeabilities of cationic, anionic, and neutral drugs through porous membrane…

Gold nanoparticles induce cytotoxicity in the alveolar type-II cell lines A549 and NCIH441.

2009

Abstract Background During the last years engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively used in different technologies and consequently many questions have arisen about the risk and the impact on human health following exposure to nanoparticles. Nevertheless, at present knowledge about the cytotoxicity induced by NPs is still largely incomplete. In this context, we have investigated the cytotoxicity induced by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which differed in size and purification grade (presence or absence of sodium citrate residues on the particle surface) in vitro, in the human alveolar type-II (ATII)-like cell lines A549 and NCIH441. Results We found that the presence of sodium citra…

From Monomer to Bulk: Appearance of the Structural Motif of Solid Iodine in Small Clusters

2009

Formation of iodine clusters in a solid krypton matrix was studied using resonance Raman spectroscopy with a 1 cm(-1) resolution. The clusters were produced by annealing of the solid and recognized by appearance of additional spectral transitions. Two distinct regions, red-shifted from the fundamental vibrational wavenumber of the isolated I(2) at 211 cm(-1), were observed in the signal. The intermediate region spans the range 196-208 cm(-1), and the ultimate region consists of two peaks at 181 and 190 cm(-1) nearly identical to crystalline I(2). The experimental results were compared to DFT-D level electronic structure calculations of planar (I(2))(n) clusters (n = 1-7). The dimer, trimer,…

Nanocarrier based on halloysite and fluorescent probe for intracellular delivery of peptide nucleic acids

2022

The development of systems able to deliver genetic material into a target site is a challenge for modern medicine. Single-stranded peptide nucleic acids have attracted attention as promising therapeutic molecules for diagnostic and gene therapy. However, their poor cell membrane permeability represents a drawback for biomedical applications. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are emerging materials in drug delivery applications both for their ability to penetrate cell membranes and for enhancing the solubility of drugs in biological media. Herein, we report the first example of the use of a nanocarrier based on halloysite labelled with fluorescent switchable halochromic oxazine molecules, to deliv…

High-Quality Metal–Organic Framework Ultrathin Films for Electronically Active Interfaces

2016

Currently available methodologies arguably lack the exquisite control required for producing metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films of sufficient quality for electronic applications. By directing MOF transfer with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), we achieve very smooth, homogeneous, highly oriented, ultrathin films across millimeter-scale areas that display moderate conductivity likely due to electron hopping. Here, the SAM is key for directing the transfer thereby enlarging the number and nature of the substrates of choice. We have exploited this versatility to evolve from deposition onto standard Si and Au to nonconventional substrates such as ferromagnetic Permalloy. We believe that t…

Complex permittivity of FeCl3/AOT/CCl4 microemulsions probed by AC impedance spectroscopy

2009

Abstract The complex permittivity of FeCl 3 /AOT/CCl 4 microemulsions in the 1–10 5  Hz frequency range has been measured by the conventional AC complex impedance technique. Measurements as a function of the volume fraction of the dispersed phase (FeCl 3  + AOT) and temperature at fixed salt-to-AOT molar ratio ( R , R  = 0.5) show that the entrapment of FeCl 3 clusters significantly enhances the local permittivity of the AOT reverse micelles and the number density of charge carriers resulting from the peculiar state of the confined inorganic salt. An estimate of the apparent static permittivity of the FeCl 3 ionic clusters entrapped in the core of AOT reverse micelles gives the very high an…

Variations of plas14a benin activity and aldostehone levels in the rat after administration of saline, chrystalloid and colloid solutions

1976

Abstract The data reported in the present paper refer to quantitative variations of plasma renin activity (PRA.) and of plasma aldosterone levels in rats after adiministration of saline, chrystalloid and colloid solutions. In our experimental conditions PRA and plasma aldosterone levels were shown to increase significantly after administration of distilled water and glucose solution. Variations of PRA and plasma aldosterone levels were only slight when plasma volume was made to increase due to administration of polyvinylpirrolidone solution. PRA, instead, was significantly lower in rats having received saline salution.
