How has the French State been able to maintain slavery for more than fifty years after the Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen of 1789? The slave was considered, in a legal scope, not as a person but as a « movable », he was considered as an object that could be bought, sold, mutilated and tortured! Although this title might be somewhat provocative, there is no intent to be anti-schoelcherist. The aim is not to diminish Victor Schoelcher's considerable achievements, but to fight against the unanimous preconceptions that have transformed this man into a myth.
