Strontium and iron-doped barium cobaltite prepared by solution combustion synthesis: exploring a mixed-fuel approach for tailored intermediate temper…

2013

Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-? (BSCF) powders were prepared by solution combustion synthesis using single and double fuels. The effect of the fuel mixture on the main properties of this well-known solid oxide fuel cell cathode material with high oxygen ion and electronic conduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the fuel mixture significantly affected the area-specific resistance of the BSCF cathode materials, by controlling the oxygen deficiency and stabilizing the Co2+ oxidation state. It was demonstrated that high fuel-to-metal cations molar ratios and high reducing power of the combustion fuel mixture are mainly responsible for the decreasing of the area-specific resistance o…

The Experimental Validation of a New Thermodynamic Method for TDC Determination

2007

In-cylinder pressure analysis is becoming more and more important both for research and development purpose and for control and diagnosis of internal combustion engines; directly measured by means of a combustion chamber pressure transducers or evaluated by analysing instantaneous engine speed [1,2,3,4], incylinder pressure allows the evaluation of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), combustion heat release, combustion phase, friction pressure, etc...It is well known to internal combustion engine researchers that for a right evaluation of these quantities the exact determination of Top Dead Centre (TDC) is of vital importance: a 1° error on TDC determination can lead to evaluation err…

Enhancement of self-sustaining reaction Cu3Si phase formation starting from mechanically activated powders

2000

Mechanical high-energy ball milling of an 3Cu Si elemental powders mixture was used to activate a self-sustaining combustion reaction or so-called self-sustaining high-temperature synthesis (SHS) to form the copper silicide phase, a reaction for which the thermodynamic criterion proposed by Munir for self-propagation reaction is not favorable. A complete characterization of the end-products was performed with X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal and structural information describing the combustion front initiated by heating up a sample to 180°C in a Cu:Si system is communicated. This paper clearly shows that the mechanically activated self-sustaining high-tem…

Citrate–nitrate auto-combustion synthesis of perovskite-type nanopowders: A systematic approach

2009

Abstract Citrate–nitrate auto-combustion synthesis is used to prepare an iron, a cobalt and a cerium-perovskite. The influence of different synthesis conditions on the combustion process, phase composition, textural and morphological properties is studied in detail by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the combustion intensity increases from iron, to cerium, to cobalt-perovskite. Conversely, the combustion intensity decreases and thus the safety and the gain of the combustion process increase by using high fuel/oxidant ratios, low pH values or combustion reactors with high heat dispersion capacity. High fuel/oxidant ratios increase par…

PBI mixed matrix hollow fiber membrane: Influence of ZIF-8 filler over H2/CO2 separation performance at high temperature and pressure

2020

High performance and commercially attractive mixed-matrix membranes were developed for H2/CO2 separation via a scalable hollow fiber spinning process. Thin (~300 nm) and defect-free selective layers were successfully created with a uniform distribution of the nanosized (~60 nm) zeolitic-imidazole framework (ZIF-8) filler within the polymer (polybenzimidazole, PBI) matrix. These membranes were able to operate at high temperature (150 °C) and pressure (up to 30 bar) process conditions required in treatment of pre-combustion and syngas process gas streams. Compared with neat PBI hollow fibers, filler incorporation into the polymer matrix leads to a strong increase in H2 permeance from 65 GPU t…

Methyl-3-Hexenoate Combustion Chemistry: Experimental Study and Numerical Kinetic Simulation

2020

International audience; This work represents a detailed investigation of combustion and oxidation of methyl-3-hexenoate (CAS Number 2396-78-3), including experimental studies of combustion and oxidation characteristics, quantum chemistry calculations and kinetic model refinement. Following experiments have been carried out: Speciation measurements during oxidation in a jet-stirred reactor at 1 atm; chemical speciation measurements in a stoichiometric premixed flame at 1 atm using molecular-beam mass-spectrometry; ignition delay times measurements in a shock tube at 20 and 40 bar; and laminar burning velocity measurements at 1 atm using a heat-flux burner over a range of equivalence ratios. …

Combustion of activated aluminum

2006

Abstract Combustion of activated aluminum was studied by four different methods: microscopic imaging of the preignition process, digital imaging of the combustion process at pressures up to 64 bar in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, TGA, and DSC. Activation by three fundamentally different methods was found effective in enhancing both the ignitability and the burn rate. The complex fluoride coating prevented agglomeration completely in all stages of combustion, while the nickel and cobalt coatings promoted agglomeration of aluminum oxide at combustion, but prevented the agglomeration of the aluminum metal before combustion. Nickel coating catalyzed aluminum nitride formation, accelerating…

Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition of Cr2O3 and Nd2O3 coatings. Oxide growth kinetics and characterization

2000

Thin oxide films of Cr2O3 and Nd2O3 were prepared, using Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) technique, to protect stainless steels against corrosion at high temperature. The conditions of precursor volatilization were studied by thermogravimetry. Deposited film growth kinetics depended on the deposition parameters, particularly substrate temperature, gas flow rate and location of substrate in the coating reactor. The influence of the deposition parameters on the deposition rate and the uniformity of the films is discussed. The oxide films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force mi…

CARS methane spectra: Experiments and simulations for temperature diagnostic purposes

2007

International audience; CARS laboratory experiments were done in the 2905-2925 cm(-1) range, in the vicinity of the v, band of the methane molecule, for pressures ranging from I to 50 bar, and temperatures up to 1100 K. These experiments were carried out in order to retrieve the pressure evolution of the CH4 spectrum, as well as to confirm its temperature dependance. After a brief recall on the theory used to compute pressure broadening coefficients and relaxation rates, we consider the v(3) and v(4) infrared bands of methane for benchmark calculations purposes. Next, we present recent experimental CARS spectra and calculated ones. Lastly, we discuss flame experiments as well as comparisons…

Investigations of the formation mechanism of nanostructured NbAl3 via MASHS reaction

2002

Abstract The nanostructured NbAl3 intermetallic compound was synthesized using the mechanically-activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (MASHS) technique. This process results from the combination of two steps: a short duration ball-milling of a pure elemental Nb+3Al powder mixture followed by a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction induced by the Nb+3Al reaction exothermicity. Synchrotron time-resolved XRD coupled with a 2D infrared camera were used to investigate the structural and thermal evolutions during the SHS reaction, and to study in situ the mechanism of NbAl3 formation. The influence of the incoming heat flux and the mechanical activation effect…
