The Sapiehas and the Potockis were amongst the most influential families of the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth. The latter family owned numerous estates in Ukraine, which were directly under threat from marching Lithuanian soldiers. Kazimierz Jan Sapieha, Grand Hetman of Lithuania was in charge of the said estates. Due to cooperation of the two magnate families, he attempted to shield the Potockis’ estates and possessions from Lithuanian troops marching to or returning from the war with Turkey. Abstract In 1648, an uprising broke out in Ukraine that belonged to Poland at the time. The war was not successful for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Cossacks and Tartars, who were helping them during the war, surrounded Zbaraż, about whose defense everyone knew in the country. King Jan Kazimierz decided to set out to rescue the besieged fortress. It was decided that not only Polish troops, but also soldiers of Lithuania would set out for Ukraine. As liminal beings, ghosts seem particularly appropriate to define, question or challenge hybrid cultures where several, seemingly irreconcilable, identities coexist. The present volume wonders how they manifest themselves in the English-speaking world, and whether there is a specifically postcolonial kind of haunting. The 22 articles deal with textual, translational or historical ghosts, and take us to Canada, Australia, Africa, India or the Caribbean. Poems by Gerry Turcotte literally haunt the volume, which thus juxtaposes theory and practice in a dynamic and fruitful way.

Artykuł niniejszy przybliża więc wybrany fragment z życiorysu wyżej wymienionego bohatera, który w latach 1700–1705 przebywał na naukach w szkole jezuickiej w Warszawie. An important element in current historical research is the analysis of diplomatic relations focusing on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. They show the history of the Polish-Lithuanian state, its internal and foreign policy from a different historical perspective. In 1700, the Great Northern War broke out and changed the political power system in Central and Eastern Europe for the next decades. Diplomats from foreign courts were interested in this war, including Philippe Plantamour, secretary of the British embassy in Berlin.
