Optimizing the MAC Protocol in Localization Systems Based on IEEE 802.15.4 Networks

2017

Radio frequency signals are commonly used in the development of indoor localization systems. The infrastructure of these systems includes some beacons placed at known positions that exchange radio packets with users to be located. When the system is implemented using wireless sensor networks, the wireless transceivers integrated in the network motes are usually based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. But, the CSMA-CA, which is the basis for the medium access protocols in this category of communication systems, is not suitable when several users want to exchange bursts of radio packets with the same beacon to acquire the radio signal strength indicator (RSSI) values needed in the location proce…

On-body to on-body channel characterization

2011

Interest in on-body communication channels is growing as the use of wireless devices increases in medical, consumer and military sensor applications. This paper presents an experimental investigation and analysis of the narrowband on-body propagation channel. This analysis considers each of the factors affecting the channel during a range of stationary and motion activities in different environments with actual wireless mote devices on the body. Use of such motes allows greater freedom in the subject's movements and the inclusion of real-world indoor and outdoor environments in a test sequence. This paper identifies and analyses the effect of the different components of the signal propagati…

On the Problems of Symbol-Spaced Tapped-Delay-Line Models for WSSUS Channels

2007

Article from the journal: Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing The deposited fulltext is a preprint of the definitive article at Wiley Interscience http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/wcm.683 This paper analyzes the validity and statistical behavior of symbol-spaced tapped-delay-line (SSTDL) models for wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) mobile radio channels. SSTDL models are obtained by sampling the channel impulse response (CIR) in delay domain at a rate equal to the reciprocal of the symbol duration. They were proposed more than four decades ago as canonical channel models for band-limited timevariant linear (TVL) systems, and are nowadays widely in use for assessing the…

Modelling the Doppler Power Spectrum of Non-Stationary Underwater Acoustic Channels Based on Doppler Measurements

2017

This paper proposes a non-stationary time-continuous simulation model for wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channels based on measured Doppler power spectrums (DPSs). Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the DPS of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the average Doppler shift and Doppler spread of the channel simulator with the corresponding quantities of the measured UWA channel. The results of the assessment show a good match between the statistical quantities of the …

Energy Harvesting-Aware Backoff Algorithms for Distributed Device-to-Device Communication

2016

Due to limited energy capacity in mobile devices, energy harvesting is regarded as a promising technology for lifetime extension in device-to-device (D2D) communication. However, medium access control (MAC) protocols designed for D2D communication intrinsically do not consider the existence of harvested energy. In this paper we study four backoff (BO) algorithms, among which one algorithm is proposed to enhance the BO selection based on energy harvesting rate and residual energy of devices. Simulations are performed in order to assess how the proposed algorithm can extend the lifetime of a D2D communication network as well as to provide fair channel access opportunities among devices.

Simple flume for flow measurement in sloping open channel

2007

First, this paper presents a new flume for measuring flow discharge in sloping channels, originally proposed by Samani and Magallanez for use in a horizontal channel. The flume is obtained by inserting two semicylinders in a rectangular cross section. Then, using dimensional analysis and the self-similarity theory, the stage-discharge relationship of the flume is theoretically deduced. For determining the two coefficients of the power stage-discharge equation, some experimental runs are carried out using flumes characterized by different values of the contraction ratio (ranging from 0.17 to 0.81) and of the flume slope (ranging from 0.5 to 3.5%). Finally, for a given range of the contractio…

The design of measurement-based underwater acoustic channel simulators using the INLSA algorithm

2015

This paper utilizes the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) algorithm for designing measurement-based wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channel simulators. Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the time-variant channel impulse response (TVCIR) of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the time-frequency correlation function (TFCF), the power delay profile (PDP), and the probability density function (PDF) of the channel envelope with the corresponding quan…

Design of a mezzanine card with bandwidth aggregation for HPGe gamma spectroscopy

2016

In experimental nuclear physics, HPGe segmented detectors are used to provide high energy resolution of the gamma rays. Besides, 4pi configuration is common to get a full coverage of the interaction point and detection of all the products of the collisions. In this type of experiments, the number of electronic channels can be high (>100) and also the sampling frequency of the digitizing system (>100 Msps). This results in a high data rate per channel (> 2 Gbps) and thus a high aggregated bandwidth to process. In principle, this problem can be solved using a parallel data acquisition system where the input channels (commonly arriving through optical fibers) are read and processed accordingly…

Dynamic QoS management for multimedia real-time transmission in industrial environments

2007

The use of multimedia within industrial applications has become commonplace, targetting improved process monitoring and machine vision. In both cases, the multimedia information is commonly distributed and subject to time constraints that must be met across networks while avoiding untolerable interference over typical control flows. This can be achieved with Constant Bit-Rate (CBR) channels, typically supported by real-time protocols. However, the compressors used to reduce the amount of information to transfer generate Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) patterns. Adapting a VBR source to a CBR channel requires specific care in order to avoid wasting channel bandwidth or dropping video frames. This pa…

Licensed and Unlicensed Spectrum Management for Energy-Efficient Cognitive M2M

2020

Edge computing has emerged as a promising solution for relieving the tension between resource-limited MTDs and computational-intensive tasks. To realize successful task offloading with limited spectrum, we focus on the cognitive machine-to-machine (CM2M) paradigm which enables a massive number of MTDs to either opportunistically use the licensed spectrum that is temporarily available, or to exploit the under-utilized unlicensed spectrum. We formulate the channel selection problem with both licensed and unlicensed spectrum as an adversarial multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem, and combine the exponential-weight algorithm for exploration and exploitation (EXP3) and Lyapunov optimization to devel…
