A Joint Time-Space Domain Analysis for Ultra-Reliable Communication in 5G Networks

2018

Reliable communication is a fundamental service level agreement criterion in wireless networks. Moreover, it is a performance indicator for ultra- reliable communication (URC) in emerging 5G networks. In URC, the quality of the delivered services to end-users ultimately depends on the availability of network resources as well as the quality of the received signal. Therefore, in order to analyze URC in cellular networks, both time- dependent spectrum availability and space-dependent service quality need to be considered. In this paper, we present a combined time and space domain analysis on network reliability based on a continuous time Markov chain model. To this end, we introduce a new rel…

A Maximizing Hydraulic Radius (MHR) method for defining cross-section limits in rills and ephemeral gullies

2021

Abstract In this paper, a new method for determining the cross-section limits in rills and ephemeral gullies is proposed. This method is based on the estimate of the actual depth ha of each cross-section, which is the particular depth distinguishing the channel from the hillslope areas. The analysis showed that the actual depth corresponds to a particular bank slope sta occurring for the maximum value of the hydraulic radius R. The method was applied using a volumetric approach for calculating the hydraulic radius as the ratio between the volume of the whole investigated channel and its boundary lateral surface. The value of the bank slope st was derived by the DEM of the whole channel late…

A non-stationary one-ring scattering model

2013

This paper introduces a non-stationary one-ring scattering model in which the mobile station (MS) can move along a straight line from the ring's center to the border of the ring. This movement results in a time-variant angle-of-arrival (AOA), which is modeled by a stochastic process. We derive the first-order density of the AOA process in closed form. Subsequently, a closed-form expression is provided for the local power spectral density (PSD) of the channel. We also formulate the local autocorrelation function (ACF) of the complex channel gain in integral form, from which a highly accurate closed-form approximation is derived. Furthermore, the average Doppler shift and the Doppler spread o…

MAC strategies for single rendezvous multi-hop cognitive radio networks

2009

This paper presents two MAC strategies for multi-hop cognitive radio networks in single radio multi-channel cases. Both strategies use one of the idle multiple channels for communication among secondary users, and the network will leave the current channel and jump to another channel as a group if any primary user appears. The first strategy is based on a pre-defined pattern that will always tune to the next available channel when primary user emerges. The second one is based on the concept of connected dominating set in which a backbone is formed in the network in order to keep the continuity of the communication. The strategies are evaluated in both homogeneous and heterogeneous channels …

Assignment of Roles and Channels for a Multichannel MAC in Wireless Mesh Networks

2009

International audience; A multichannel MAC improves throughput in wireless mesh networks by multiplexing transmissions over orthogonal channels. In this paper, we propose an efficient way for constructing the wireless mesh structure associated with Molecular MAC, a multichannel MAC layer designed for efficient packet forwarding. Molecular MAC outperforms other classical approaches, but requires a specific structure for efficient operation. First, we propose a centralized protocol that provides an upper bound for constructing such a molecular structure through a MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) formulation that maximizes network capacity. Then, we present two distributed self-stabiliz…

A mini-slot-based cooperative MAC protocol for wireless mesh networks

2010

This paper proposes a TDMA-based medium access control protocol with cooperative communications enabled in wireless mesh networks. The proposed scheme is based on a multi-hop scenario which is extended from the conventional one-hop triangle cooperative transmission scenario. Benefiting from the elaborate mini-slot design, channel resources are fairly and efficiently allocated to each router so that no handshake is needed prior to every packet transmission. By giving priority for channel access to cooperative transmission performed by an optimal helper which is determined based on the received SNR, higher successful transmission rate can be achieved. Numerical results demonstrate that the pr…

A geometric street scattering channel model for car-to-car communication systems

2011

This paper presents a geometric street scattering channel model for car-to-car (C2C) communication systems under line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation conditions. Starting from the geometric model, we develop a stochastic reference channel model, where the scatterers are uniformly distributed in rectangles in the form of stripes parallel to both sides of the street. We derive analytical expressions for the probability density functions (PDFs) of the angle-of-departure (AOD) and the angle-of-arrival (AOA). We also investigate the Doppler power spectral density (PSD) and the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the proposed model, assuming that the mobile transmitter (MT) and the mo…

An ergodic wideband MIMO channel simulator based on the geometrical T-junction scattering model for vehicle-to-vehicle communications

2010

In this paper, a wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) simulation model for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channels in T-junction propagation environments is proposed. This simulation model takes the exact relationship between the angle-of-arrival (AOA) and the angle-of-departure (AOD) into account. In order to determine the parameters of the simulation model, the Riemann sum method (RSM) is applied. Furthermore, the statistical and ergodic properties of the simulation model are studied. Closed-form solutions are derived for the space-time-frequency cross-correlation function (STF-CCF), the two-dimensional (2D) spatial cross-correlation function (CCF), the temporal autocorrelation functi…

MAC learning

2016

Cognition as a way to deal with the challenges of future wireless networks has been largely considered by the recent literature, with a main focus on physical layer adaptability and dynamic spectrum access. In this demo, we show how a simple cognition mechanism can be also applied at the MAC layer, by exploiting the emerging paradigm of programmable wireless cards. The idea is using the formal definition of simple MAC protocol components and platform-independent representation of channel events gathered from the wireless node, for emulating the behavior of protocols which are not currently running on the network, learning about their expected performance, and dynamically reconfiguring the w…

No Reservations Required: Achieving Fairness between Wi-Fi and NR-U with Self-Deferral Only

2021

Wireless technologies coexisting in unlicensed bands should receive a fair share of the available channel resources, even when they use different access methods. We consider the problem of coexistence between Wi-Fi and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) nodes, which employ, respectively, a random and scheduled access scheme. The latter typically resorts to reservation signals (RSs), which allow keeping the control of the channel until the start of the next synchronized slot. This mechanism, although effective for increasing the channel access opportunities of scheduled-based nodes, is also a waste of channel resources. We investigate alternative solutions, based on self-deferral only. We built ana…
