Blending the Erotic and the Divine in Mystical Literature

2004

THE BEGINNINGS OF SYMBOLIC-RELIGIOUS COGNITION - Cognitive Archeology and Cognitive Fluidity: About 30,000 years ago (70,000 years after the fossil records of the anatomically modern human), religious thought and symbolic conceptual activity arose from the capacity of integrating specific-domain a process called "cognitive fluidity" (Mithen 1996). Metaphor, Anthropomorphism and Cognitive Science: Metaphor is a basic mental capacity by which people understand themselves and the world around them through conceptual mappings of knowledge between mental spaces, using everyday knowledge to reason about more abstract concepts. Of all the templates for supernatural concepts, the ones that seriousl…

Ethics in Legal Research

2023

The essay grapples with one of the most controversial issues about legal research, namely its complex ethical and methodological dimension—here argued to be comparative—assessing the high scientific value of studying law. After clarifying what differentiates such a field of research from other natural and social studies, the authors address the presence of secondary interests and the need to use personal data for scientific purposes, as relevant situations which could undermine the reliability of any legal research or allow its thoroughness at the risk of interfering with human rights. The adherence to a rigorous and effective method in investigating national and foreign law, and the compli…

Exon deletions of the PAH gene in Italian hyperphenylalaninemics

2010

A consistent finding of many studies describing the spectrum of mutant phenylalanine hydroxylase alleles underlying hyperphenylalaninemia is the impossibility of achieving a 100% mutation ascertainment rate using conventional gene-scanning methods such as Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (DHPLC), direct sequencing. In recent years, it has been shown that a significant proportion of these undetermined alleles consist of large deletions overlapping one or more exons. These deletions have been difficult to detect in compound heterozygotes by gene-scanning methods due to the masking effect by the non-deleted allele. To date no sys…

The text deals with the birth of scientific interests towards extra-western musical traditions thanks to the new discipline called "comparative musicology" and to ethno-anthropological studies of evolutionist and diffusionist orientation. In this context of study, particular importance is given…

Gemelle diverse. The churches of the Holy Trinity of Delia and San Nicolò Regale in Trapani, Sicily

2019

The work develops the necessary phases before arriving at a restoration project. The main objectives are: the study and historical-architectural analysis, the knowledge of the current management and enhancement of the two churches, the proposal of strategies to show the value of the remains of the past and to educate the new generations and the development of a method. In addition to the data collection "in situ" relative to the current conditions of the elements, their state of conservation and the documentation of existing pathologies, an architectural survey has been carried out to perform the comparative analysis of both churches and the proposals of action. The two architectures are th…

Submersed in the water, buried in the ground: comparative studies on metal assemblages and single finds from french Iron Age non-funerary contexts (V…

2020

Metal hoards are emblematic discoveries of European protohistoric societies and therefore an extremely dynamic research theme. However, even though there are many synthetic studies concerning Bronze Age practices, they are much less frequent concerning Iron Age deposits. In fact, since 1995 (Kurz 1995), no synthetic inventory on this subject had been carried out despite the regular increase in the number of discoveries since the development and multiplication of preventive archaeological excavations. Under these conditions, it seemed important to update the data and this led to the completion of a master's degree on this subject in 2011 (Le Cozanet 2011). Since then, our research hasn‘t cea…

Citocentrifugación como un método adicional para estudiar celomitos de equinodermos: un enfoque comparativo que combina células vivas, preparaciones …

2021

Abstract Introduction: Echinoderm coelomocytes have traditionally been investigated through a morphological approach using light microscopy, which relies on the idea of constant cell shape as a stable character. However, this can be affected by biotic or abiotic conditions. Objective: To analyze if the consistency in cell morphology offered by the cytocentrifugation method, might be used as a convenient tool to study echinoderm coelomocytes. Methods: Cells of Echinaster (Othilia) brasiliensis (Asteroidea), Holothuria (Holothuria) tubulosa (Holothuroidea), Eucidaris tribuloides, Arbacia lixula, Lytechinus variegatus, and Echinometra lucunter (Echinoidea) were spread on microscope slides by c…

Towards next generation diagnostics for tuberculosis: identification of novel molecular targets by large-scale comparative genomics

2019

AbstractTuberculosis remains one of the main causes of death worldwide. The long and cumbersome process of culturingMycobacterium tuberculosiscomplex (MTBC) bacteria has encouraged the development of specific molecular tools for detecting the pathogen. Most of these tools aim to become novel tuberculosis diagnostics, and big efforts and resources are invested in their development, looking for the endorsement of the main public health agencies. Surprisingly, no study had been conducted where the vast amount of genomic data available is used to identify the best MTBC diagnostic markers. In this work, we use large-scale comparative genomics to provide a catalog of 30 characterized loci that ar…

CALANGO: a phylogeny-aware comparative genomics tool for discovering quantitative genotype-phenotype associations across species

2023

The increasing availability of high-quality genomic, annotation and phenotypic data for different species contrasts with the lack of general software for comparative genomics that integrates these data types in a statistically sound framework in order to produce biologically meaningful knowledge. In this work, we present CALANGO (Comparative AnaLysis with ANnotation-based Genomic cOmponentes), a first-principles comparative genomics tool to search for annotation terms, such as GO terms or Pfam domain IDs, associated with a quantitative variable used to rank species data, after correcting for phylogenetic relatedness. This information can be used to annotate genomes at any level, including p…

Bacterial endosymbiosis is an important evolutionary process in insects, which can harbor both obligate and facultative symbionts. The evolution of these symbionts is driven by evolutionary convergence, and they exhibit among the tiniest genomes in prokaryotes. The large host spectrum of facultative symbionts and the high diversity of strategies they use to infect new hosts probably impact the evolution of their genome and explain why they undergo less severe genomic erosion than obligate symbionts. Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa is suitable for the investigation of the genomic evolution of facultative symbionts because the bacteria are engaged in specific relationships in two clades of in…
