Replicating Experiments in “Detour Behavior” with Artificially Evolved Robots: An A-Life Approach to Comparative Psychology
1999
To be useful in psychology "artificial organisms" have to perform tasks comparable to those performed by animals. One way to achieve this is to rephcate actual animal experiments. Here we reproduce an experiment showing "detour behavior" in chicks - a behavior usually explained in terms of "cognitive maps" or other forms of internal representation. We artificially evolve software-simulated robots with a "generic" ability to detour. Sensor-motor physics are carefully calibrated with data from a physical robot. Robot architecture is constrained to exclude internal representation. The evolutionary process rewards exploratory skills as well as detour behavior. Robot performance matches the resu…
Gender Differences on the Concept of Wisdom: An International Comparison
2013
The study aims to depict the most common ideas regarding wisdom from young people (ages 15-18) in Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Korea and the United States. A questionnaire was administered to nearly ...
Why Comparative Research on the Middle Years?
2018
Anyone who has recently stepped into a middle years’ classroom knows all too well the truth of this portrait—the lived experience of learners in our schools today. Early adolescents are truly a unique group of learners, like none other a teacher might experience—a group that will at one moment test a teacher’s mettle and the very next bring so much elation and reward that a teacher might even question how they could ever think of working with another age group. This is the appeal and the true curiosity behind the early adolescent learner and is the heart of what we will present to you in this book.
Il gesto comparativo negli studi urbani critici
2021
Not all cities are the same, but the processes that occur within them can be assimilated and analyzed thanks to more or less universal mo…
The fine structural organization of sternal glands of pseudergates and workers in termites (Isoptera): a comparative survey
2008
1873-5495 (Electronic) Comparative Study Journal Article; Thirty-nine species belonging to different families of termites are studied to give a comprehensive view of the evolution of the sternal glands. Several modifications occurring at cuticular and cytological levels are described in neuter castes. The outer epicuticle is always pierced by epicuticular pores. In advanced termites the epicuticular filaments greatly increase in number and length creating a thick layer. The pore canals gradually enlarge while the cuticle changes into a lattice structure lining an extracellular space in which the secretion is stored. Two classes of cells are present in basal termites (Mastotermitidae, Hodote…

Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA): Guidelines for research practice in Information Systems and marketing
2021
Abstract The increasing interest in fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) in Information Systems and marketing raises the need for a tutorial paper that discusses the basic concepts and principles of the method, provide answers to typical questions that editors, reviewers, and authors would have when dealing with a new tool of analysis, and practically guide researchers on how to employ fsQCA. This article helps the reader to gain richer information from their data and understand the importance of avoiding shallow information‐from‐data reporting. To this end, it proposes a different research paradigm that includes asymmetric, configurational‐focused case‐outcome theory construc…
A Comparative Evaluation of a Virtual Reality Table and a HoloLens-Based Augmented Reality System for Anatomy Training
2020
Anatomy training with real cadavers poses many practical problems for which new training and educational solutions have been developed making use of technologies based on real-time 3-D graphics. Although virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been previously used in the medical field, it is not easy to select the right 3-D technology or setup for each particular problem. For this reason, this article presents a comprehensive comparative study with 82 participants between two different 3-D interactive setups: an optical-based AR setup, implemented with a Microsoft HoloLens device, and a semi-immersive setup based on a VR Table. Both setups are tested using an anatomy training s…
Identifying the combinations of motivations and emotions for creating satisfied users in SNSs: An fsQCA approach
2020
Social Networking Sites (SNSs) play an important role in our daily lives and the number of their users increases regularly. To understand how users can be satisfied in the complex digital environment of SNSs, this study examines how motivations and emotions combine with each other to explain high satisfaction. Users’ motivations comprise four attributes, entertainment, information, social-psychological, and convenience. Emotions are divided into their two main categories, that is positive and negative emotions. We draw on complexity and configuration theories, present a conceptual model along with propositions and perform a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Through an empi…
