Acting Agentically at Work: Developing a Short Measure of Professional Agency
2021
Although professional agency has become an increasingly crucial issue in work organizations, investigators lack a brief instrument to measure it. This paper introduces a short measure to explore professional agency at work. Our aim was to shorten the original 17-item Professional Agency Measure, while also exploring its usability for cross-validating questionnaire datasets, and investigating the relationship between professional agency and work engagement. Three dimensions of professional agency emerged, with three items per dimension, across the domains of healthcare, real estate services, and information technology (all within Finland). All the dimensions (Influencing at work, Participati…
Exploring the critical incident technique to encourage reflection during project-based learning
2017
Previous research has reported on the challenge of promoting students' generic reflection during authentic project-based courses. This work explores a teaching intervention based on Flanagan's Critical Incident Technique (CIT) during a project-based software development course. The intervention aims at increasing students' awareness of their own learning and at encouraging reflective practice throughout the project. Students were asked to report on 'incidents' when they experienced learning during the course, and to reflect on the task itself at the end of the course. The present study focuses on how students approached the incident reporting task and how they perceived it. The results indi…
Soft Competencies and Satisfaction Levels for Software Engineers: A Unified Framework
2019
The importance of software engineers’ competency has long been established as a key pillar for the development of robust software in order to achieve quality software. Software engineering competency research is not necessarily lacking. Nevertheless, the satisfaction derived from using software competency needs more investigation. The aim of this study is to identify soft competencies from empirical data and create satisfaction levels for software engineers’ soft competencies. The result shows 63 soft competencies with three different satisfaction levels consisting of basic, performance and delighters. The paper contributes to the SEC research by highlighting the satisfaction levels of soft…
Open-ended projects opened up — aspects of openness
2017
Abstract—One of the most important areas of competence for professional engineers is the ability to function well in project work, in particular they need to be able to efficiently solve open-ended problems in different collaborative settings. The development of this ability is however not prominent in engineering education despite numerous authors suggesting openended problems as a pedagogical tool to promote development of collaborative problem solving competence by including elements of group or project work in courses. In our own long experience of using open-ended problems in collaborative student projects, we have identified a lack of systematic progression in learning outcomes and sk…
Awareness and knowledge of cyberethics: A comparative study of preservice teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain
2021
This paper explores the awareness and knowledge of cyberethics held by pre-service teachers across three European countries. The study was conducted via an online survey and yielded 1,131 responses from pre-service teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain. The facets of cyberethics included in this study focused on behaving responsibly online, safeguarding privacy, respecting copyright, seeking consent of friends before posting images or videos on social media platforms, and considering their professional identity as future teachers when posting online. The findings indicate that pre-service teachers reported relatively similar levels of competence in applying copyright and respecting privacy r…

TRANSVERSAL COMPETENCES IN HIGHER EDUCATION CURRICULUM OF POPULAR MUSIC STUDIES IN SCOTLAND: CURRENT FRAMEWORK, PROBLEMS AND FUTURE POTENTIAL
2017
Transversal competences - alternatively referred as ‘21st century skills’ and ‘key competencies’ is a term rigorously discussed within the international research and education community since the beginning of the century. However, two major challenges remain, such as how to efficiently integrate the concept of transversal competencies into existing programmes, as well as how to assess transversal competences across the curriculum. It is important to recognise the potential for applying the concept of transversal competences to popular music curricula, as this multidisciplinary field combines all three aspects: broader creative sphere (musicianship, composition, cultu…
Latvijas studentu uzņēmējkompetenču novērtējums
2016
Bakalaura darbs „Latvijas studentu uzņēmējkompetenču novērtējums” izstrādāts ar mērķi novērtēt Latvijas studentiem raksturīgās uzņēmējkompetences, kā arī noteikt studentus ietekmējošos uzņēmējdarbības vides faktorus, izvirzīt priekšlikumus studentu uzņēmējkompetenču veicināšanai un uzņēmējdarbības atbalsta infrastruktūras uzlabošanai Latvijā. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no trīs daļām. Pirmajā daļā tiek veikts vispārējs uzņēmējdarbības jēdziena un uzņēmējkompetenču teorētiskais apskats. Otrajā daļā autors analizē studentus ietekmējošos uzņēmējdarbības vides faktorus Eiropas Savienībā un Latvijā, uzsvaru liekot uz uzņēmējdarbības atbalsta infrastruktūru. Trešajā daļā tiek veikts Latvijas studentu …
Mental health promotion competencies in the health sector based on a Delphi study
2018
Purpose Effective public mental health policy and practice call for a trained workforce that is competent in mental health promotion and delivering on improved mental health.
