Caring in space: the boundaries between public and private spaces in Finnish adult foster care homes

2020

AbstractThe purpose of this article is to explore a hybrid community-based form of care for older people called adult foster care. In the article, the nature of the foster care home as a place of care is explored from the foster carers’ point-of-view. It is based on an interview study of 12 foster carers. In this article, the theoretical frameworks from human geography and work–family research are combined in order to analyse the boundaries between private family-life and public work-life in the particular space of the foster care home. The research questions are: What kinds of public and private spaces exist in adult foster care homes? What kinds of boundaries separate (a) the public and p…

The impact of ideological positions and personal attributes of candidates in intraparty competition: A study under the Swiss open‐listPRSystem

2022

Intraparty preference voting systems offer different incentives for candidates to cultivate a personal vote, but little is known about how the candidates' policy positions affect their elec-toral success in intraparty competition. This article analyses the effect of candidates' ideological positions and personal attributes on their preference vote share in the 2015 and 2019 Swiss Lower House elections. We used candidate survey data combined with official election statistics. Our findings demon-strate that the ideological distance between candidates' posi-tions and their party's median position is of minor importance for their electoral success when compared to their personal attributes. Mind the gap: Treefalls as drivers of parental trade-offs

2015

Abstract Tree‐fall gaps are small‐scale disturbances whose formation, colonization, and role in forest dynamics are well documented, but whose effects on animal ecology are still greatly overlooked, except for studies comparing species richness of gaps 6+ months old to that in the closed canopy. Other factors associated with the invasion of fresh tree‐fall gaps such as animal breeding adaptations have been largely neglected. I studied the immediate (within hours and days) arrival of the poison frog Dendrobates tinctorius in new tree‐fall gaps to examine the dynamics of their invasion in relation to tadpole rearing. I found that rearing sites are occupied sooner and tadpoles deposited at hig…

Opaque Distribution Channels for Competing Service Providers: Posted Price vs. Name-Your-Own-Price Mechanisms

2014

Opaque selling has been widely adopted by service providers in the travel industry to sell off leftover capacity under stochastic demand. We consider a two-stage model to study the impact of different selling mechanisms, posted price (PP) versus name-your-own-price (NYOP), of an opaque reseller on competing service providers who face forward-looking customers. We find that in this environment, providers prefer that the opaque reseller uses a posted price instead of a bidding model. This is because the ability to set retail prices is critical for extracting surplus from customers who wait to purchase from the reseller. Such surplus extraction enables providers to set high prices for advance…

Articulating the Practice Architectures of Collaborative Research Practice

2016

This chapter explores a collaborative practice of comparative data analysis through the researching activities of four researchers from Australia and Finland. We interrogate the ontological and empirical reality we experienced while engaged in a practice of analysing narrative data on mentoring. In this chapter, we are not reporting on the outcomes of our analysis of mentoring practice; instead we focus on our collaborative engagement, articulating the practice architectures of our research practice. This collaborative research practice was pre-figured by: (1) philosophical traditions instituted through a theory of practice architectures; and (2) normalised practices of researching mentorin…

Is Democracy Exportable?

2017

Among many aspects to the question of whether democracy is exportable, this contribution focuses on the role of the people, understood not as a unitary actor but as a heterogeneous set: the citizens. The people matter, in a different way, both in the countries to which democracy might be exported and in the democratic countries in which the question is about promoting democracy elsewhere. The mechanisms or characteristics involved in the discussion include yardstick competition, differences among citizens in the intensity of their preferences, differences among autocracies regarding intrusion into private life, citizens’ assessments of future regime change, and responsiveness of elected inc…

Intellectual Property Rights: An Economic Approach

2014

Abstract This paper aims to analyse the intellectual property rights from an economic perspective. The paper is discussing the points of view of well known economists in relation to the positive and negative impacts of the intellectual property systems. It brings also into discussion the role of IPR as a barrier to entry and a mean to restrict competition and to favour monopoly situations.

From bid-rigging to subcontracting: the Italian experience

2023

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to provide insights into bid rigging, especially when it meets the instrument of subcontracting. In particular, the Italian experience will be used to illustrate how said instrument can raise both competition and corruption problems when designing a sound public procurement regulation. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on reports, legal scholarship, and other open-source data to examine the legislative framework surrounding subcontracting and the issues related to bid rigging and corruption. This study also relies on the examination of some Italian cases showing the evolution of the Italian public procurement legislation in relation to the har…

Saskaņotas darbības izpratne Latvijā.

2018

¿Me voy o me quedo?
