Openings in technology-mediated business meetings

2015

The prerequisites for opening a meeting, or beginning any kind of interaction for that matter, are participants’ presence and shared orientation towards the situation at hand. This paper analyses how the initial moments of technology-mediated business meetings involving distributed work groups are organized sequentially and multimodally. Drawing on video-recorded meetings in an international company, it documents the multimodal practices used in the process of establishing co-orientation to the shared meeting space and achieving entry into the meeting. The analysis shows that the stepwise unfolding of the opening phase requires the coordination of verbal and bodily conducts as well as the a…

Distance crossing and alignment in online humanitarian discourse

2018

Abstract This article analyzes multimodal genres of current online humanitarian discourse such as mission statements, annual reports and photo galleries to find how the construals of beneficiaries and humanitarian organizations align with the motives, values and emotional dispositions of prospective donors. The discursive reduction of distance between the donor and the beneficiary is likely to produce solicitation effects and enable self-legitimization. First, based on extant literature, the article develops a method to account for the pragmatic operations of textual ‘proximization’ and visually simulated ‘co-presence’ in humanitarian communication. Then it applies it to a sample of multimo…

Focal social actions through which space is configured and reconfigured when orienting to a Finnish Sign Language class

2018

Abstract This paper focuses on how signing students organise themselves spatially in social interactions in a university lecture hall. One may view space as a concrete location, a social construct, and a normative actor with historical trajectories. The study addresses the question, ‘What are the mediated actions through which the students and teacher (re)configure space for participating in a class?' Following a methodological framework of Mediated Discourse Analysis and multimodal interaction analysis, I approach this question by examining the social actions occurring when entering a lecture hall. The primary data includes video recordings, photos, and participatory observations, document…

Potenciant un turisme cultural atractiu pel patrimoni de Llíria més enllà dels pilars tradicionals d'arqueologia, bandes de música i fires gastronòmi…

2019

[EN] This study of tourism in Llíria/Liriais based on surveys, which gathered statistical data on the visits made to city and the reasons for visiting it, in order to determine the tourist potential of the municipality. The study made it possible to extract relevant information to formulate tourist interests around three attractive cultural elements: the typical interests of historical character, gastronomy through food festivals, and music in the form of local band competitions. This last attractionof the "City of Music"could constitute the key to developing a different local offering, Llíria 2.0. The Internet inclusive of networks and social media have brought a new era for promoting and …

Dots, Lines, Areas and Words: Mapping Literature and Narration (With some Remarks on Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening”)

2009

The so-called spatial turn of the humanities has led to an increasing interest in mapmaking. Looking at various trends in map-making the paper evaluates possible links and cooperation between cartography and literary studies. Differentiating between two central questions - which features of literature may be considered as spatial and in what way literature as a social practice could become spatially relevant – the paper argues that maps of literature should be based on specific features that constitute a literary text as opposed to other forms of art and discourse. Claiming that maps of literature should provide more than a visualisation of structure or an illustration of certain forms or c…

”Twixt Land and Sea” in Conrad's Youth: a Narrative and Two Other stories...

2017

The article aims at discussing the interdependence of the marine and the land spaces in Conrad’s works. Although they serve the same purpose—they constitute the background, and set the scene for Conrad’s tales, the marine space works quite frequently as a catalyst for human actions. The Youth: A Narrative and Two Other Stories volume is analysed in order to present the image of land and sea as created by the writer. Moreover, the voyage, the element joining the tales, will be considered from the perspective suggested by Juliet McLauchlan in her inspiring article Conrad’s ‘Three Ages of Man’: The ‘Youth’ Volume.

The Novel as Third Space in the Struggle for One’s Own Place: Witold Gombrowicz’s Hidden Polemic with German Literature in „Pornografia”

2020

This paper deals with Gombrowicz’s novel „Pornografia” which can be interpreted as a third space where different literary discourses and philosophical concepts are interwoven. In this respect two German authors deserve special attention: Thomas Mann and Friedrich Nietzsche. It is the aim of this article to show to what extent Gombrowicz refers to the writings of these two authors in his attempt to establish himself as an important writer during his exile in Argentina. The novel „Pornografia” works in this respect as a sphere of interferences and a space of emerging hybridity, where Gombrowicz creates a special textuality consisting of hidden references to and even polemic with both Mann and…

Experimental manipulation of breeding density and litter size: effects on reproductive success in the bank vole

1999

1. Reproductive success of individual females may be determined by density-dependent effects, especially in species where territory provides the resources for a reproducing female and territory size is inversely density-dependent. 2. We manipulated simultaneously the reproductive effort (litter size manipulation: ± 0 and + 2 pups) and breeding density (low and high) of nursing female bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus in outdoor enclosures. We studied whether the reproductive success (number and quality of offspring) of individual females is density-dependent, and whether females can compensate for increased reproductive effort when not limited by saturated breeding density. 3. The females …

High population density in bank voles stimulates food hoarding after breeding.

1998

The effects of conspecific density (i.e. risk of intraspecific competition) on hoarding behaviour were studied in breeding pairs of bank voles, Clethrionomys glareolus. I simulated high population density by using odours of conspecifics, to exclude the direct effects of exploitation or interference competition for food. The pairs of bank voles hoarded only at the end of their breeding season. Hoarding was not correlated with whether the voles had a litter during the experiment or their litter size, but was more likely at the high population density and for pairs with small females. This may indicate that smaller females especially make caches in the autumn, possibly to ensure better winter …

Romania: Regional Persistence in a Highly Nationalized Party System

2017

Romania has a nationalized party system whereby the effective number of parliamentary parties has gone down and the left-right dimension of political competition has become consolidated. Statewide parties manage to electorally homogenize the electorate through using a similar electoral system for regional and national elections and by holding regional elections just before national elections. However, in this chapter, we also find that regional parties are persistently present in some regions and some of them mobilize voters along an ethno-cultural dimension. These regional parties do not only have an important impact at the regional level by offering alternative policy options but they are…
