Pharmacological cognitive enhancement (PCE), the use of illicit and/or prescription drugs to increase cognitive performance, has spurred controversial discussion in bioethics. In a semi-structured interview study with 60 German university students and employees, differences and similarities in moral attitudes toward PCE among 30 experienced participants (EPs) vs. 30 inexperienced participants (IPs) were investigated. Paul Ernest is an internationally recognised authority on the philosophy of social-constructivism particularly in the context of mathematics education. He has published widely on the issue, perhaps his two best known and widely cited works are ‘The Philosophy of Mathematics Education’ (Ernest 1991), and ‘Social Constructivism as a Philosophy of Mathematics’ (Ernest 1998). As one engages with this short paper it is evident that one is in the company of a ‘master’ of the topic. It is quite remarkable how within the space of about 4000 words he manages to produce an erudite and informative account of 4 related theories of learning, and outline some of their implications for teaching.

Within regions, differences in the number of species among clades must be explained by clade age, net diversification rate, or immigration. We examine these alternatives by assessing historical causes of the low diversity of a bird parvorder in the Himalayas (the core Corvoidea, 57 species present), relative to its more species rich sister clade (the Passerida, ∼400 species present), which together comprise the oscine passerines within this region. How does the market react to your order flow?

We present an empirical study of the intertwined behaviour of members in a financial market. Exploiting a database where the broker that initiates an order book event can be identified, we decompose the correlation and response functions into contributions coming from different market participants and study how their behaviour is interconnected. We find evidence that (1) brokers are very heterogeneous in liquidity provision -- some are consistently liquidity providers while others are consistently liquidity takers. JEM-X: three years in space

We report on the technical and scientific performance of JEM-X, the X-ray monitor on ESA's INTEGRAL mission. INTEGRAL has now been in orbit for more than three years, and the mission is foreseen to be extended until the end of 2010. Overall, JEM-X performs very well, and can be expected to continue to do so for the duration of the mission. We discuss in some detail the operational experiences and the problems encountered with the microstrip detectors caused by the space environment and give one example of the interesting scientific results obtained. The analysis software is still being improved on, and we discuss briefly the significance of these improvements.

Competition of continuous and projective measurements in filtering processes

A quantum system interacting with a repeatedly measured one turns out to be subjected to a non-unitary evolution which can force the former to a specific quantum state. It is shown that in the case where the repeatedly measured system is subjected to the action of its environment, the occurrence of a competition between the dissipation and the measurements can reduce the influence of the decay on the filtering process. Both theoretical predictions and numerical results are presented.

Sexual selection on male body size and assortative pairing in Gammarus pulex (Crustacea: Amphipoda): field surveys and laboratory experiments

Variation in size-assortative pairing was studied in relation to sexual selection on male body size in the amphipod Gammarus pulex, using both transverse and longitudinal surveys of natural populations. In addition, the influence of male–male competition on size-assortative pairing was tested in the laboratory. In both surveys, the intensity of sexual selection was positive and significant for male body size but not for females, and size-assortative pairing was positive and significant. This paper presents the design and implementation of the Neuma platform, a digital library devoted to the preservation and dissemination of symbolic music content (scores). Neuma is open to musicologists, musicians, and music publishers. It consists of a repository dedicated to the storage of large collections of digital scores, where users/applications can upload their documents. It also proposes services to publish, annotate, query, transform, and analyze scores.
