We have demonstrated that the expression of Candida albicans genes involved in translation and protein folding (EFB1 and SSB1) complements the phenotype of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants. Molecular cloning and evolution of lobster hemocyanin.

In the American lobster, Homarus americanus, oxygen is transported by a hemocyanin that is composed 2 x 6 subunits. N-terminal sequencing show the presence of three distinct subunit types (alpha, beta and gamma). We cloned the cDNA of one of these subunits that belong to the alpha-type. It encodes a hemocyanin subunit of 654 amino acids with a molecular mass of 84.8 kDa, which is synthesized in the hepatopancreas. Phylogenetic analyses of the crustacean hemocyanin sequences show two well-separated clades, which correspond to the alpha and gamma-type subunits. Sequences of beta-type subunits are still unknown. When a biomaterial displays a compromised biocompatibility, distinct complement pathways can be activated to produce a foreign body reaction. Response of rainbow trout transcriptome to model chemical contaminants.

We used high-density cDNA microarray in studies of responses of rainbow trout fry at sublethal ranges of beta-naphthoflavone, cadmium, carbon tetrachloride, and pyrene. The differentially expressed genes were grouped by the functional categories of Gene Ontology. Significantly different response to the studied compounds was shown by a number of classes, such as cell cycle, apoptosis, signal transduction, oxidative stress, subcellular and extracellular structures, protein biosynthesis, and modification. Toxicogenomics represents the integration of genomics and toxicology to investigate the interaction between genes and environmental stress in human health. It is a scientific field that studies how the genome is involved in responses to environmental stressors and toxicants. The patterns of altered gene expression that are caused by specific exposures or disease outcomes reveal how toxicants may act and cause disease. Proteomic Profiling of Secreted Proteins for the Hematopoietic Support of Interleukin-Stimulated Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) secrete a number of factors that greatly impact the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). These factors remain largely unknown. Here, we report on the most comprehensive proteomic profiling of the HUVEC secretome and identified 827 different secreted proteins. Two hundred and thirty-one proteins were found in all conditions, whereas 369 proteins were identified only under proinflammatory conditions following IL-1β, IL-3, and IL-6 stimulation. AbstractWe describe a novel localization of C7 as a membrane-bound molecule on endothelial cells (ECs). Data obtained by sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Western blot analysis, Northern blot analysis, and mass spectrometry revealed that membrane-associated C7 (mC7) was indistinguishable from soluble C7 and was associated with vimentin on the cell surface. mC7 interacted with the other late complement components to form membrane-bound TCC (mTCC). The two genes for the C4A and C4B isotypes of the fourth component of human complement are located in the MHC class III region. Previous studies have demonstrated the unusual expression of C4 genes in the form of aberrant or duplicated haplotypes. Null alleles of C4A or C4B (AQ0 or BQ0) have been defined by the absence of gene products and occur at frequencies of 0.1-0.3. However, only some C4 null alleles are due to gene deletions, the remainder were thought to be nonexpressed genes.
