Recently cDNAs coding for cell surface molecules have been isolated from sponges. The molecules for alpha-integrin, galectin, and receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), obtained from the marine sponge, Geodia cydonium, have been described earlier. In the present study also the cDNA for one putative beta-integrin has been identified from G. cydonium. The endemic freshwater sponge Lubomirskia baicalensis lives in Lake Baikal in winter (samples from March have been studied) under complete ice cover at near 0 degrees C, and in summer in open water at 17 degrees C (September). In March, specimens show high metabolic activity as reflected by the production of gametes. L. baicalensis lives in symbiosis with green dinoflagellates, which are related to Gymnodinium sanguineum. Here we show that these dinoflagellates produce the toxin okadaic acid (OA), which is present as a free molecule as well as in a protein-bound state. beta gamma-crystallins are one major component of vertebrate lenses. Here the isolation and characterization of a cDNA, coding for the first beta gamma-crystallin molecule from an invertebrate species, the marine sponge Geodia cydonium, is described. The size of the transcript as determined by Northern blotting was 0.7 kb in length. The deduced amino acid sequence consists of 163 aa residues and comprises four repeated motifs which compose the two domains of the beta gamma-crystallin. Plant cytochrome b 5 reductases (b 5 R) are assumed to be part of an ER-associated redox chain that oxidizes NADH to provide electrons via cytochrome b5 (cyt b 5 ) to ER-associated fatty acyl desaturase and related hydroxylases, as in mammalian cells. Here we report on cDNA cloning of a novel maize b 5 R, NFR II, strongly related to a previously cloned cDNA, NFR I (Bagnaresi et al., 1999, Biochem, J. 338, 499-5051. The hemolymph juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) from the early fifth instar larvae of Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) has been purified, and three cDNA clones for this protein have been isolated from a fat body cDNA library constructed in bacteriophage λZAP XR. The deduced amino acid sequence of the full-length clone predicts a mature protein consisting of 224 residues, a molecular mass of 24 976 Da, and a p/ of 5.29. Most aphids develop a cyclic parthenogenesis life-cycle. After several generations of viviparously produced parthenogenetic females, follows a single annual generation of sexual individuals, usually in autumn, that mate and lay the sexual eggs. Shortening of photoperiod at the end of the summer (together with temperature) is a key factor inducing the sexual response. X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is an inherited demyelinating disorder due to mutations in the ALD gene, which encodes a peroxisomal ABC half-transporter (ALDP). It has been suggested that ALDP assembles with ALDRP (adrenoleukodystrophy-related protein), a close homologous half-transporter, to form a functional heterodimer.
