Dynamics of two competing species in the presence of Lévy noise sources
2010
We consider a Lotka-Volterra system of two competing species subject to multiplicative alpha-stable Lévy noise. The interaction parameter between the species is a random process which obeys a stochastic differential equation with a generalized bistable potential in the presence both of a periodic driving term and an additive alpha-stable Lévy noise. We study the species dynamics, which is characterized by two different regimes, exclusion of one species and coexistence of both. We find quasi-periodic oscillations and stochastic resonance phenomenon in the dynamics of the competing species, analysing the role of the Lévy noise sources.
Evidence for the presence of autoantibodies to the collagen-like portion of C1q in systemic lupus erythematosus.
1988
We investigated the connection between the C1q solid-phase binding assay (C1q SPBA) and double-stranded DNA antibodies, and analyzed the immune complex material in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) sera. Comparison with a new monoclonal assay for C1q-bearing immune complexes (the 242G3 assay) revealed that the immune complexes in SLE bind specifically to solid-phase C1q, and not to fluid-phase C1q. The C1q solid-phase binding activity sedimented as 7S IgG, was insensitive to DNase treatment, and could be selectively absorbed by C1q-coupled beads and by bovine serum albumin-anti-bovine serum albumin C1q beads, but not by DNA. Thus, antibodies to double-stranded DNA do not interfere in the C…

Two are not always better than one: ligand optimisation for long-living light-emitting electrochemical cells
2009
The complex [Ir(ppy)2(dpbpy)][PF6] (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, dpbpy = 6,6'-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine) has been prepared and evaluated as an electroluminescent component for light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs); the complex exhibits two intramolecular face-to-face π-stacking interactions and long-lived LECs have been constructed; the device characteristics are not significantly improved in comparison to analogous LECs with 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine. Modelling the Complex Dynamics of Public Opinion Propagation in Micro-Blogging.
2018
The purpose of this paper is to attempt to analyze the propagation of public opinion in micro-blogging. We proposed a Micro-blogging read-post model based on a well-known diffusion model and presented its system of equations. We carried out a global qualitative analysis of the model with latent and constant recruitment, then studied the existence and stability of the public opinion vanishing and prevailing equilibrium points. An empirical study of the model was conducted using data automatically collected from a typical case on Sina Weibo, a microblogging platform with the largest number of registered users and active users in China. Simulation results showed that our model can fit data in …
Complex Networked Systems: Convergence Analysis, Dynamic Behaviour, and Security.
Complex networked systems are a modern reference framework through which very dierent systems from far disciplines, such as biology, computer science, physics, social science, and engineering, can be described. They arise in the great majority of modern technological applications. Examples of real complex networked systems include embedded systems, biological networks, large-scale systems such as power generation grids, transportation networks, water distribution systems, and social network. In the recent years, scientists and engineers have developed a variety of techniques, approaches, and models to better understand and predict the behaviour of these systems, even though several research…
Quantifying nouns in Italian
2012
Preface
2019
The Enrico Fermi Schools are a highly prestigious series of summer schools of the Italian Physical Society with a tradition of more than 60 years and with many Nobel laureates as lecturers (https://www.sif.it/attivita/scuola_fermi/). The International Schools devote special care in planning the program and produces proceedings of the school that have become classics. Recently an increasing number of interdisciplinary topics have been selected and our school fits into this trend. Our school will consider complex systems of social and economic origin by teaching and discussing concepts and topics of computational social science and econophysics. These are fields, where physicists, computer sc…
Language in Complexity. The Emerging Meaning
2017
This contributed volume explores the achievements gained and the remaining puzzling questions by applying dynamical systems theory to the linguistic inquiry. In particular the book is divided into three parts, each one addressing of the following topics: a) Facing complexity in the right way: mathematics and complexity; b) Complexity and theory of language; c) From empirical observation to formal models: investigations of specifici linguistic phenomena, like enunciation, deixis, or the meaning of the metaphorical phrases.
Shift-and-scale-invariant pattern recognition using an elliptic coordinate-transformed phase-only filter
1992
A shift-and-scale-invariant elliptic coordinate-transformed phase-only filter in proposed. The filter is built in three steps: the complex conjugate of a basic-size target spectrum is calculated, its phase-only part is taken, and then the elliptic coordinate transformation is made. In the extreme case the scale ratio of recognizable objects equals 1:1.5, permitting good recognition of object sizes S within the range 0.83/= S/= 1.25. Discrimination abilities and relative Horner efficiencies of a few versions of the filter are calculated.
